Who are these new players? Mateta was on the bench today. Just imagine if he had come on and we didn't win, what would people had said then?

I get where the OP is coming from. I didn’t watch it because I can’t stand the way we play. Our style of play is dull, dull, dull. Is that what fans really want? We sign new players and Roy won’t play them. The chances are Mateta will never start a game. What kind of message does that send out to any potential signings? You didn't watch it. Therefore you are not a fan or a supporter. Your opinion is worthless if you didn't watch it. The chances are that Mateta will start a game, we bought him. He signed, so that is the message he got. He just needs to integrate into the squad. Or, in the "Roy Out" tradition, be ruined by that dinosaur like all our other players.

I hope Mateta is a raging success for us, but I'm amazed at how many people are demanding his immediate inclusion when we've literally never seen him play, as if Benteke, Batshuyi and Ayew have not a single, solitary positive attribute, as if (joking aside) they're pretending to be footballers and we've just rumbled them and this scandal must be corrected this very second. Actually, our existing forwards are proven to be of a certain standard. Not amazing, not something we can't improve on, and not something the new man can't aim to overtake, but not nothing either. That is the 'Roy out' mindset all over. Demanding change for its own sake immediately as if we've nothing to lose, when we absolutely have got everything to lose. We were one up against a good team today in a very tight game, had lost one player to injury and used another sub for fresh legs. It wasn't the time to ask an unknown quantity to step into the unknown, whatever our hopes for him might ultimately be.

Haha exactly. The same rhetoric was spewed when Eze transfer was finalised and he’s a first team regular. Next they’ll be blaming Roy for not starting Ferguson... As the poster above said, we have three competent strikers Mateta has to get past first, he can’t just walk into the team. Ayew has been lively over the last two games

I'm as critical as anyone on the way Palace have been playing. However I thought we put in a professional and quite decent performance today. Our passing was a notch up from usual, I thought we defended well in the main, and we kept a clean sheet. The one area of concern was creating chances - something we did virtually nothing of in the first half, but did marginally improve on in the 2nd. But that's nothing new.

I'm sorry, but although we won, that was turgid and dull and all the time we were 1-0 up, Mateta was never going to get his debut. In fact it was not working all the time Batshyuai was on the pitch, yet unless we were losing, Roy was never going to sub him. He did after we went in the lead, but only brought Townsend to shore up the game. It was still beyond dull. Mateta will only end up making a few appearances from the bench this season if he is lucky. We are treading water under Hodgson. I forgive you. Edited by Tickled pink (30 Jan 2021 11.41pm)

3 points make the weekend so MUCH better. Who cares about the playing side then? Just enjoy the win - they are far and few between.

We didn't create much, two shots on target, but the goal was decent, good work by Ayew again. If Zaha could maintain some level of calm in front of goal instead of slash wildly then it would and should have been two. Nevertheless a clean sheet and a win, a confidence booster. So you would get rid of 2 out of 4 strikers! That’s good thinking. Totally agree about Jairo have been saying this for some time

Edited by Kant (30 Jan 2021 10.07pm) I don't think you remember it very well, then, because we never played Notts County in the old 3rd division! Assuming we are talking about the seasons 1974/5 to 1976/7, which I recall as being a good time to be a Palace fan. We were always challenging - we finished 5th, 5th and 3rd - we were laying down the foundations of a half-decent side, we remained "headline news" throughout under Malcolm Allison and Terry Venables - always on the back pages of the papers - we reached the semi-final of the FA Cup in the days when all clubs fielded their strongest teams and we won the FA Youth Cup (and then again in 1977/8 following promotion to division 2). Oh and I was young then! Edited by YT (31 Jan 2021 8.22am)
