no, he was dating a widow known as Sue, she lived all alone in Lindley Lane at number 22, it was two ton from Teddington who drove the baker's van you're getting mixed up with: "Now Ernie dragged him from his van and beneath the blazing sun, They stood there face to face, and Ted went for his bun." And as for Ernie Howe maybe the OP meant this bloke:

jury's out on Howe, wouldn't be surprised if it went either way. I'd prefer Pearson, Bilic (now unavailable)or Dyche (won't come) to either Ernie or Frank.

Show off

Thing is, does it ever actually happen that way? Far more likely that we end up selling any good young players we happen to develop to premier league clubs, as happened last time with Clyne and Zaha.

Not often, to answer the question. I do think we would be in a better position than the Club that sold Clyde, and Wilf, was. it would all depend on the resolve of the club. I wouldn’t pretend for a moment it is a fail safe option. Or one I would feel totally comfortable with.
But it’s as realistic as thinking the club can hire a manager that can get us top half Premier status, keep us there, without ,him getting pulled , and every budding talent , going the same way either before he goes or soon after. And that’s without it all going tits up before it even got off the ground. And the end product being ,what?
This in my opinion would probably sum up how things would go for Lampard, either way.

The one thing that always sticks out for me is the interview that Ian Holloway did a few years after he left us.

He said that he had come to the club with his own ideology on how football should be played and wanted to move us from the style which we were playing at the time, counter attacking, to a more possession based and attacking team.

He said it was the first time in his career that the players had just absolutely resisted this change. The players only had any real interest in playing as a counter attacking team, hence why we did so well under Pulis after him.

The team between then and now is vastly different and one that should be able to transition across to that style of play. However, with Home, his philosophy and style is at complete odds to have we have set up for the last decade. If we are to bring him in, then he will need time, to be backed to bring in players that suit his style of play. If we don't have the patience and backing, then he will just be another FDB.

FDB was too much too quickly, but Howe will still be a significant shift and will only work if we can get in 2 more midfielders that are both comfortable on the ball and have composure. The only CM I can see working under him is Jairo.

The old “mutual consent” which is well over used and can mean so many things....

I’d prefer Thomas Frank at Brentford to Howe or Dych. Works on a budget, plays good football, Palace are a step up

Ernie Howe looks just right for the Palace and, as his last job was at Sutton, he may even still live in the area, so no moving costs to pick up if he accepts the job. He's still only 67 so a pup compared with Roy. Worth a punt if we can't get Eddie! Lol!!!

Ernie Howe is an English football manager and former player who is currently no longer managing a team after he mutually parted company with Sutton United on 30 March 2008, having failed to pull them out of the Conference South relegation zone. He was Basingstoke Town's manager for 13 years until 2006, winning the Hampshire Senior Cup and promotion during his tenure.

A defender in his playing career, Howe turned out for Fulham alongside the likes of George Best and Rodney Marsh. He was a member of the Fulham squad beaten 2–0 by West Ham United in the 1975 FA Cup Final but did not make the team. He was subsequently transferred to Queens Park Rangers and then Portsmouth. Although not known for his goal scoring Howe scored on his Pompey debut at home to Sheffield United in August 1982. He helped Portsmouth win the Division Three championship that season. The following season before leaving Pompey he also scored in his final home game.

After leaving Portsmouth he was appointed coach at Wokingham Town.

He married the sister of fellow footballer Andy McCulloch, whose father Adam McCulloch had also played.

55 years on the Palace rollercoaster!

I recall Andy McCulloch playing for us in the 80s.

I don’t see either Howe , or Lampard , as an instant answer to who should get the job ,post Hodgson. What I do think is it will be very hard to move this club forward if it is not drastically reinvented. We can name a few possible safe hands , none of which will prevent us being competitive only in the lower end of the league. And that will always involve a percentage of plain and simple safety first football
As far as Lampard is concerned, I feel he could reinvent us but in the Championship, where he has already shown how with his Derby side ,built on one or two young players brought in . An unfinished project but a good indication of his ability. I don’t believe we can be reinvented easily whilst trying to survive the week in week out pressures of the realities of Premiership football. Our academy is not the whole answer, but we have the means to bring in quality youngsters. And in the Championship could be developed into certainly a classier outfit, with more potential for real progress. Thinking there is an instant answer to turning CP into a silk purse is nice, but going to be very hard to achieve,
By the way our academy is doing very well, maybe not as far adrift as you say.

How exactly would reinventing ourselves in the Championship work?

I have put one or two explanations in previous posts. It’s not a given, we should start again in the Championship, just a suggestion . It’s not a request to get relegated, it’s more to do with how best to use someone with Lampards talents. I have said I wouldn’t go for either ,Howe, or Lampard. But if I did it would be Lampard, And his best chance would be in having time to change our approach drastically to climbing the Premier.
For me the most likely route for the club is to consolidate what Hodgson , has started, with the emphasis on organisation and application. And for that my choice would be Chris Wilder.

Me too. To me he’s the obvious candidate.

I would give Frank ,a go if the club could back him in the same way as his predecessor is getting supported at Villa. He seems to have a very good support system behind what he does now at Brentford.
