I’ve never understood how anyone can pluck a team out of the hat from 5000 miles away, surely it means nothing, if you haven’t got the memories of match day, experiencing it live, a connection to the area and club, you’ve got nothing as far as I’m concerned, but each to their own I guess, times have changed. The OP is a great post but I’m not local to the club but have been supporting them for over 30 years now. As a young child I had no interest in football until my friend made me watch a semi final on the tv, Palace vs Liverpool. Since then I’ve loved football and us. Yes I’ve seen us play live many times before my job took me out of England a few years ago. But your post and the other similar ones means I shouldn’t support the club I have loved for all this time? The club I loved at all times? I’ve always believed the club chose me, without it I’d be one of those strange people that doesn’t watch football. As for people knocking Parish, I still remember being devastated when it looked like I’d lose the club I support and had told myself I’d have to live life without a club to support until he was one of the ones who saved us, so those complaining about our football this season should be thankful he allowed us to watch our club still.
Why would anyone chose to be a Seagull? The Eagle is a far superior creature. The Seagull lives under it's damp pier meekly looking out, blinded by the sheer quality of the Eagle's palace. |

I started supporting Palace in the late 50’s when Dad and I went on the bus every other week from Wallington, changing at West Croydon, to stand on the Holmesdale Road terrace. I squeaked ‘Up The Palace’ and rattled my, hand painted, black and white rattle as loudly as I could. I can remember the stinking Gents down the back and the Bovril hut which was roughly where the away dressing rooms are today... and I loved it. We always went to the same spot and I’d perch on the barrier until I was big enough to stand and peer through a gap in the crowd. If I was lucky Dad would buy some peanuts from the bloke hawking his wares. Occasionally we’d walk right round the ground – there was only one stand in those days – and watch the second half at the Whitehorse Lane end if we were playing in that direction ‘so we could see all the goals go in’. When the game was a bit dull I’d wander round picking up the empty beer bottles from by the men’s feet and return them to the Bovril hut where they were worth a penny each... and I loved it. The 60’s were a blur and in 1971 I married and work took me away from the area, but I’ve never lost my Palace passion. I’m not a season ticket holder and I don’t get to many games now. The last match I saw was in October 2019 when Man City beat us 2-0... and I loved it. Not the result – just being there. Thing is, there are a lot of negative comments on here and, to be honest, it irks me although I am pleased to see some more positive and realistic things being written recently. We all accept that Crystal Palace FC is not a big club, but that’s the attraction isn’t it? I am retired now, but when I was out earning a crust I tried my best to do a good job although sometimes things didn’t work out. Well, as far as I’m concerned, Steve Parish tries hard to do a great job at Palace and let’s face it, he’s done exceedingly well. Same goes for Roy who has done a brilliant job in keeping us in the world’s greatest football league for a record period of time. Some of the criticism he and some of our players get on here is unfair I think. Sure, we sometimes play a nervy game and tactics such as his late and seemingly strange substitutions appear odd, but everyone at the club tries their best for it to be a success and it is quite normal if it doesn’t work out every time. A few of our players are not always performing at their best, but that doesn’t mean they’re not trying. I could name some that I regard as past their ‘Best Before’ date, but that would defeat the point of this post. Our great club is run by a Board of lifelong supporters, the manager supported us when he was a lad and we are fortunate to have many loyal, long serving folk, including ex –players working hard behind the scenes to make the club a success within a limited budget. It always feels to me like ‘our’ club rather than ‘the’ club and I love it that way. I suspect that, despite the criticism on here sometimes, most of us would be appalled if we were owned and run by a multinational conglomerate and managed by one of our friends from abroad. It wouldn’t feel right and, anyway, it was tried before Roy came on board and it certainly didn’t work then. We will continue this strange season with more great results and a share of disappointments, but we will not be relegated. We will enjoy some sparkling football and endure some dour games. We will leap off the sofa and hide behind same in equal measure I suspect. Who knows what the future holds these days, but one thing is certain, being a Palace supporter will never be dull. And I love it that way! As a fellow traveller, I heartily agree with you. I started watching around the same time, in the '50s. We could see the floodlights on the main stand from our kitchen window in Whitworth Road. It was never in doubt that Palace were our team. It was in the days of Chairman Arthur Wait, manager Cyril Spiers and players like Mike Deakin, Terry Long, Johnny McNichol, Johnny Byrne and Vic Rouse. Millwall were our biggest rivals. So I have been through similar turmoil over the decades. Getting to the top division was always just a wild dream. Now some of us feel that we are living that dream. Similar ups and downs but at a higher level. If it was perennial success, it would not be football. Let's just ease up on the hand-wringing and calling for the manager's head every time we lose a game or two. Sure, we could get a Guardiola, Klopp or Mourinho - but could they work within our club's means as well as Roy does? I doubt they would even try. That's me and my barrows's outside.

I've just joined Holmesdale.net because this post was pinned. Let's have some perspective -I lived Oliver Avenue from 1966-1976 moved away but still a Glazier fan (sorry, Eagle). So many memories, sometimes bizarre, of following Palace - even other fans recognise our ups and downs. As I write, yet another bizarre Palace result at Brighton of all clubs...

Great original post and great topic. I think the perspective of who we are has shifted. My teenagers watched 2 seasons in the championship, in one of them we were promoted. Then all they have seen is premier league football. Football that in the early days was more swashbuckling than safe sometimes. But they have never known us be anything other than premier league - that is something we should be very proud of. We are duking it out with the worlds best and have seen Bolasie, Jedinak, Speroni, Zaha and Murray battling Rooney, Aguero, Lampard, Suarez and Yaya and sometimes we win! Better times than being beaten by Luton, Doncaster and worst of all Charlton? Its good to hope for more. But we shouldnt forget where we came from. I cant wait to get back in the ground and sing louder than ever. Edited by eric youngs headband (12 Mar 2021 1.43pm)

I have a friend who supports Man City proper old school supporter but if he gets into a conversation with someone he doesn’t know about football he has to start dropping in how he stood on the Kippax or talking about Ian Bishop or Imre Veradi with in a couple of minutes just so they know he is not a recent convert.

Wasn’t it in Varadi’s honour that people used to wave inflatable bananas around? Good job it wasn’t in Joey Barton’s name or who knows what they would have waved in the air.
