I think that last night's performance was something we have seen in the past from Hodgson's teams but not often enough this season. Once we had recovered from the shock of the early goal, we used possession well and defended resolutely. Guita wasn't seriously extended all night. As Silvertop pointed out, when we have the majority of the possession we tend to struggle. Given Newcastle's result and performance at Everton, the conditions last night, a long way from home at that - that was an excellent win. Some people on here are not getting past their anti Hodgson bias to see it that way however.

In terms of the Cahill goal, he made a run from the back post but his marker got blocked by Batshuayi, more by accident than design so Cahill had a free header. That was the only positive contribution by Batshuayi the whole game,he was truly abysmal. Agreed that Darlow may well have saved it, but I think that's the beauty of such a powerful, true strike - any slight nick off anyone and the keeper has no chance. Personally I love a goal like that, it's like the shot is struck so well that it refuses to do anything other than go in, no matter what the defenders try to do to stop it! Batshuayi was indeed awful again, but in fairness he isn't doing anything unexpected. We already knew his leading of the line was almost non-existent, that he can't time or curve a run if his life depends on it, and that if he isn't finishing a chance then he is something of a passenger. On the flip side, he is a more instinctive finisher than anyone else we've got (Mateta may change that hopefully), but as he isn't getting chances in the box, apart from that one that spun up at him against Wolves, we are only getting all the negative sides of his game. I thought Benteke did pretty well when he came on, and remain of the view that he may be worth retaining on reduced wages, with Batshuayi going back to Chelsea.

Really frustrating night for us. We were taking shots and, for the first time this season, had more possession than the opponents. Don't remember your 'keeper having to make too many top tier saves though. Interested to hear your thoughts on the Milivojevic foul? In isolation that game was fine for us, created chances, didn't look too troubled by your attack until the game was stretched in the closing stages. Undone by a superb goal and a set piece. Meh, it happens. Trouble is, that's now 1 win in 13 and we're running out of winnable games.
The more possession we seem to have, the less likely we are to win the game because our ageing defenders and CDMs (excluding Riedewald) don't have the legs to get back when we lose the ball (think our demolition by Liverpool when we tried to play attacking football). I was frustrated when you did us in the reverse fixture earlier in the season. We had a lot of possession that day; your keeper made some great saves and we got done in the final minutes. So as has been said - honours even for the season. As for Luka, lucky boy, BUT these tackles always look far worse in slo-mo. Mind you the red card for that new So'ton lad was a no brainer. Talking of So'ton, will be interesting to see how they react to last night when they face you on Saturday.

Luka has been one of our best players recently and it certainly isn’t down to Jairo. He has to do double the work when he is beside him. What game are you watching? Luka has been complete s***e for 12 months. He is painfully slow, passing is shoddy and set pieces are a joke. I will give him credit as far as the last two performances have been marginally better but he is clearly a player on the decline. No goals or assists since Bournemouth away and weekly bookings highlight this. I’m not saying Jairo is the best midfielder in the world but there’s no way Luka is carrying him. As a team we’ve been carrying Luka for far too long.

Something else from last night.. I've never been convinced by the argument that Van Aanholt makes up for his piss poor defending by adding attacking verve to our play, though I see the logic in that argument. What bothers me more is his sloppy, careless use of possession. If I had a pound every time he did something stupid with the ball in our third right after we've worked hard to win it back, I'd have nearly as much money as he actually gets paid not to fecking do it.

Well, I for one, am glad Jairo has just signed extension to 2024 In my humble estimation he has been a 'Positive' in our team, with the ability to actually pass a ball to one of our own players and has a calmness and composure when in possession. He has also scored goals for us.Well done to Jairo ! I did feel that towards the end last night he was 'Running on empty' and wasn't surprised when he was substituted.

As for the Luka challenge, I thought at the time he’s gone and watching it again on MOTD I’m absolutely amazed that VAR didn’t review it and recommend a red card. Not the most dangerous tackle in the world but it still ticks all the boxes as far as the PGMOL are concerned. I’m amazed he stayed on. You should be safe this season, as there will be SUFC & WBA below you and the return of ASM and your performance against Everton last Saturday would suggest you will be able to outperform at least one other team.

True, I cant remember him being caught on the ball. However he gave the ball away a mulititude of times with misplaced passes. This and the obligatory yellow - you just know its gonna happen sooner or later - is turning him into a liability. Agree with Jairo's pace and passig sentiment. What I would add is that he does add to the overall defensive stability by moving into spaces vacated by our fullbacks. This we saw against West Ham. Newcastle were so slow to move forward yesterday that he was rarely called upon to do this. For all people saying Luka's was outpassed by Jairo last night and Luka's passing was poor. Just take into account that Luka attempted 45 passes last night with a success rate of 93.3% while Jairo attempted a lot less at 27 passes with a success rate of 92.6%. We are all biased towards certain players but the stats don't lie.

Lines are his passes, black circles his tackles and clear circles his interceptions. The star is, of course, his goal.
