But agree, he should have been subbed early, was only saved by the injury to Wilf and lack of clarity over what place was best to replace him

Hodgson said that because of the quick turn around in recent matches there has been no opportunity in training to do more than what he calls small sessions (on half a pitch). He wants to see Mateta "stretch his legs" on a full size pitch training session and I suspect that will happen later this week with our next game not being till Monday evening. I'm hoping and expecting that we'll get to see Mateta playing on Monday even if it's only a cameo off the bench. We need to remember that the club have invested a lot of time in monitoring this player and want him to be a success. We fans just need to be patient. It was a few games before Eze got to play regularly. Good points. Think we will see him quicker than Eze as he was a permanent deal but Mateta is a season loan deal with option to buy.

I think giving Bats two starts after scoring against West Ham send a good message that if you perform you will get your chance. He has been woeful for two games, so hopefully he now goes back to updating Instagram on the bench. As to Tekkers, he is good at defending set-pieces and when on his game holds the ball up well, so I see why you would bring him on when trying to hold a lead rather than throwing on a new player keen to impress (who might not, for example, head for the corner in the dying minutes). Obviously we all want to see what Mateta has got, but there's no panic after two wins that have put us well clear of any relegation concerns.

I'm sure people understand the sentiment behind those commenting on Roy not playing our latest striker signing, he has form for not using players at his disposal. Although I agree its only 2 games in and we won, so nothing to stress..yet. On a side note as others have said, whats happened to Bats? Possibly a combination of frustration at lack of game time, not 'match fit' or just where he is in his career now.

Agreed! He has been with us for two matches, both of which we won! If Roy had started him or brought him on and we hadn't won the game, then Roy would have got pelters. Spot on. We have had him for two weeks and I’m that time won both our games. Quite incredible really,

He reminds me of the 10-11 years old kids first introduced to the offside rule. Some never get to grasp about it - Batsman seems to be like that. He just puddles around on the pitch and you could see the despair/anger in Wilf's eyes when he put the ball in the net and Batsman was flagged offside. Good summary of Bats - just runs forward and then look surprised when the flag goes up. His all round game is very poor, but we already knew that after his loan spell 2 years ago.

With Batman going back to Chelsea and surely Benteke will finally be off this summer, Mateta is probably one for next season, signing him early, easing him in gently the rest of this season and a good pre -season behind him, hopefully we’ll have a striker chomping at the bit and ready to bang a few goals in next season

The OP here is just the latest example of an unreasonable, and frankly childish criticism of Hodgson.

I have spoken to a plethora of people, not devotees of our club, who are astounded that Mr Hodgson has received brickbats from some of our supporters given his record since he was handed the 'Reins' with the team in some turmoil. Mr Hodgson is very much respected by many in the game, currently connected with the game and those no longer involved and it seems these chaps hold our manager in far higher esteem than many of our supporters. Perhaps when Mr Hodgson is gone, many will fully realise his worth at our club.

When he does finally start to play for us (and we're allowed back in stadiums) I look forward to hearing the HF singing a song about this guy. To the tune of 'Hakuna Matata' (from the Lion King)... it could be one of the great chants. Jean-Philippe Mateta He has no worries It's not perfect but with a few tweaks it could catch on I reckon! Reminds me a bit of the Mignolet chant to the tune 'Wimmoweh' when he was at Sunderland. Anyone else bored of lockdown?!! Edited by JazzPalace (03 Feb 2021 4.26pm)
