Stone the crows, it's all a bit different from a how I remember it. Can't believe how Surrey Street looks. Do they still have market stalls there? I used to go swimming in the Scarbrook Road baths close by and my Mum was a waitress in the Blue Room restaurant at Kennards which was probably 3rd after Grants and Allders, but it had a great arcade running from North End to Drummond Road I think, which I remember wandering through many a time. Anyway, good video and pleased you shared it. Thanks for the memories. Yes the Market is still there. I believe it's one of the oldest street markets still active in England dating back to the 13th century. When I was in the plod at Croydon ITV used to pay the Met for a couple of coppers to be on duty to help close roads etc for filming of The Bill. I did it a few times and alot of scenes were filmed in Surrey Street. Also, if anyone remembers from a few years ago a BBC series called Murder in Successville was filmed around Croydon. Also the pub scene between Ricky Gervais and Les Dennis in Extras was filmed in the pub in Surrey Street. I think it's called The Bulls Head.
Don't waste your time with jealousy. Sometimes your ahead, sometimes your behind, the race is long. But in the end it's only with yourself!! |

Kennards - I used to go into Croydon on the bus with my dad on a Saturday morning sometimes, I guess I was about 12 at the time - we started to go into Kennards from the side entrance through the glass doors which that morning had the handles removed for cleaning, I wasnt paying enough attention and walked face first slap bang into one of the glass doors, OMG did I feel stupid & somewhat shocked.....

Curiosity led me to this site which describes more fims made in the area. Didn't realise Croydon looked like Gotham! And couldn't figure out how to create a link!!
Dad and I watched games standing on the muddy slope of the Holmesdale Road end. He cheered and I rattled. |
