Lessons from the game,
- Don’t attempt to turn Eze into Townsend by playing him right wing as was done in the first half
- Don’t play a 2 man midfield against a mobile opposition that rotate players. You’re likely to be outnumbered.
- Mark from set pieces and don’t continue to give free headers to the opposition
- Provide some service to the striker(s) or Mateta is likely to go the way of Benteke, Batshuayi and Sorloth in looking pretty hopeless
- Don’t play against a quick opposition with no pace in your central defence or deepest midfield position. Kouyate was available and would have not been exposed for pace as were the three players in question.
Feel free to add other lessons.

The point about Eze is interesting as I always thought he was a right sided player but it appears he is more comfortable on the left.
In hindsight we should have started with Townsend on the right and left PVA on the bench where he truly belongs!

I have to say PVA’s performance surprised me. You would expect an attacking minded defender to be comfortable doing what he normally does in getting forward whilst still defending but from a more advanced position. He looked totally lost however and ended up doing neither. A midfielder he is not.

Why don’t we have any meaningful shape or structure in attack. We’ve got so used to relying on moments of brilliance from Zaha or Eze that this seems to have been bypassed by the coaches. Oh yeah..we also have ‘ hit em on the break’ yawn yawn. Did you notice how Leeds played in attack? Great passing...creating triangles..always having options.
Time for a change I think.

Iv tried not to be too hard on him because he is young but my lord he is awful on the ball. He looks petrified every time it ends up at his feet.

A good team is built around a solid spine.

Guita is a very good goalkeeper, but look what he has in front of him.

Our central defenders - whatever the ever changing combination is - are past it. It showed up again tonight, no pressure on the ball for Leeds first goal.

Luka in midfield. A shadow of the player he was three years ago. Now a liability in possession and the only thing consistent in his game is a yellow card.

Up front Benteke, Bats don't retain the ball nor are they a goal threat. Too soon to evaluate Mateta, but tonight will have given him a glimpse of what it takes and he's got his work cut out if he's going to make it in this league.

As for the game, we saw the best of Leeds with their high press and energy levels. I thought we also saw the other side of their game - they did give us room to play in but our players failed to make the most of those opportunities and we ended up a poor second.

Of course Hodgson is coming in for the inevitable post defeat bashing despite actually trying some new ideas and giving Mateta his debut.

Perform like tonight at the Amex in 2 weeks time, and I dread to think what this board will be like.

The time has come for him to be dropped. He has 1 strength and that’s shot stopping from close range. His kicking game is atrocious and he is awful under crosses. There is no harm with getting Butland in for a stint.

It was never going to work. You don’t go from an out an out left full to a winger over night, he was lost.

I actually think we will lose our next 3 games and will be looking over our shoulder.
Burnley,Brighton and Fulham are playing much better than us.

Fulham have won 2 games all season. They are as certain to be relegated as you will ever see.

I agree, obvious parallels with him and AWB. To me, Mitchell does not look ready. If PVA is off which I think is likely we need another LB option. I am unsure if TM is as good as we hoped but he has time. One thing he can do is cross a ball though.

PVA started out as a winger, and I've lost count of the number of posts on here criticising his defending and suggesting he plays further upfield.

Last night he found it very difficult against the Leeds 'Press' and his passes and clearances were rushed.
When AWB came into the side it was recognised that he was a a tad 'raw' and a work in progress but that there was player in there.
I don't have the same feeling about Mitchell, who on many occasions appears out of his depth, however he is young and inexperienced and hopefully as he matures will evolve into a solid performer for us.

Along with WBA and Sheffield, with ourselves just above them, fourth from bottom.
Chris Sutton was so critical of our woefully inadequate performance last night, claiming we had switched off and gone to sleep during the game and yet Roy claims this is his strongest ever squad in his four year tenure!!

Hopeless,hopeless,and yet more hopeless.

I have spoken to full-backs with attacking prowess and they have told me it is a different dynamic advancing forward from full-back with the play in front of them.

I believe it was Ashley Cole who mentioned similar sentiments and he was a striker in the Arsenal academy who filled-in at left-back due to an injury and stayed in this position.

Good points and bang on the team presently being spineless. Roy's thinking was too keep the side that did well against Newcastle but if it had not been woeful finishing by them we would of lost possibly badly. 21 shots in the game. Leeds were different, converting a few but again if their finishing had been better we would of got a real pasting. Agree about the central defence, beginning to show it's age whichever 2 goes in there.
