Just as well there are no supporters at Selhurst as by now they may have been a lynching or two. Palace were absolutely dire last night. No game plan and the passing was even worse than usual. Yes the pitch was a disgrace but Leeds seemed to make it work.

Leeds cut through our lines like a sharp knife in hot butter. And why on earth keep passing the ball backwards especially under such dire conditions?

Mateta looks slow, gangly, low work rate, and unable to do anything other than wait for a brilliant cross. How is that any different than Benteke or Sorloth? Really, Mateta looks like the the stupidest signing we've had in recent years, which is really saying something. Given it was his first game with zero service this is a bit OTT. If he has as many games as Big Ben has over the last few seasons it would be pretty hard for him not to beat his stats

Bloody hell, give him a chance. Poor b****** has only played one game, it's a bit early to be writing him off. Seem to remember Speroni had some shocking appearances for us when he first joined, he proved to be ok though didn't he? As others have said, we could have Lewandowski, Kane, Messi or Ronaldo up front for us and then still wouldn't score goals as they wouldn't see the ball. Jesus turned water into wine but even he wouldn't have been able to convert our service into goals. Partially because he was scared of crosses.

Had a few decent touches and can see potential but how on earth we can judge any player in that performance last night is beyond me. Hoping for good things to come, but IMO we missed the boat as usual on Ollie Watkins.

I know we were sh!te last night, but blaming the new bloke seems a bit off. The whole team wasn't at it's best, we looked low in confidence pushing forward, too many passes back and our midfield was flat and without ideas. I don't think you can say whether Mateta is any good or not based on last night, just not enough game time to make that determination.
The trouble with computers, of course, is that they're very sophisticated idiots |

Absolutely right, you can't blame a new player for something that has been building up for 2/3 seasons.

What a bunch of absolute arse. He played with his back to goal receiving 30, 40 yard "passes" that any striker would have struggled with. On the occasions when he had something to compete for he did nice flicks and layoffs. Bats ALMOST NEVER does this. He had one ball to feet in the box (at an awkward angle) and slipped because that pitch was so unsteady it should have been illegal. What the actual f*** could he have done? I wonder how many of those slagging him off after 60 minutes in a new, higher intensity league also wrote off Bamford and loved calling him Bumfluff. We lost to Leeds. They were better than us. Case closed.

I thought he did okay. Looked a bit raw but at least tried to close the ball down. He probably did more running in 65 minutes than Beneteke has done all season, which is why he faded. A very difficult debut. I can't quite understand the thinking in having him as an unused sub for 2 games and then throwing in him in the deep end by including him in a team whose entire back 4 shouldn't be anywhere near starting for a Premier League team. Our captain looks shot to bits and needs replacing ASAP and our best player is injured. The only players that did okay last night were Jairo, Eze and maybe Townsend. I know PVA has been indifferent this season but he played in our last 2 games that we won so I am not sure why he was shoved into midfield and then hooked at half time when it didn't work out. Really poor from Roy last night who was given a lesson in how to play exciting football from a newly promoted team whilst standing in his technical area muttering away to himself.

Considering the absolute crap performance of most of those behind him last night, there is no way anyone can be totally judgmental about Matetas performance.
