Luka for me was again the worst player on the pitch. A traffic cone, would've been more effective. Not only has he been so poor for so long now but he really doesn't have leadership qualities. I really rate Riedewald but he was poor last night too on the whole. We miss McArthur massively. A player who despite his advancing years covers every inch of the pitch, rarely puts a foot wrong and has all of the traits that a captain needs, unlike Luka!

"It's ok postman , he'll lick you to death" "That isn't really that comforting , I still end up dead !!"

The formation isn't really the focal point for me, more the fact we were obviously intending to sit very deep. If you sit that deep the formation becomes a bit moot as you will just end up looking like two banks of bodies defending for lives as we did last night. I'm guessing that Eze was there to fulfil his defensive duties, as was every other man, but also in the hope he might get us up the pitch or play a killer pass at some point when we had a rare venture outside our own half.

Further games are a different matter but last night (despite my stance on RH) I felt it was the right call to play almost all out defence and it just didn't happen for Eze. He's in his first PL season and has had some great moments so far and most importantly we got the win last night so I'm really not that fussed by one game. Perhaps McCarthy is better suited to that type of game defensively but I don't think he holds as much potential to skip past a few players and take us up the pitch. You could argue both opinions with validity.

I agree. If McCarthy had been fully fit he would probably have started having seen how we set up. No one is like Eze in our team but he is a luxury player and we were definitely set up not to lose, so not really required. 4-3-3 basically is 4-5-1 defensively but it hardly got a chance to be 4-3-3 as we were under constant pressure. You could of course argue that both crosses for the goals came from the players in their 4-3-3 positions.

There is no way we could have played 4-4-2, as we would have been torn apart in midfield, more so than we already were.

That triple save that started with the Trossard attempt and saw the ball ricochet on the edge of the 6 yard box was more than Luka and Eze managed to achieve. Also Guaita had to stay alert for long periods, just in case.

And the same can be said for the Brighton defence. Like zaha even with a crap game ignore him at your peril

Also benteke you do not want to be the CB who switches off and enables tekkers to rediscover his heading prowess.

Qualities even when rubbish.

I thought we had players who did very little last night. So little we barely noticed them. I didn't notice Ward or Reidewald much. I noticed Eze in the full back position several times - which said to me he was forced to cover Mitchell, who is OK but not great really. Luka was awful and made his usual bad challenge.
I'm basically saying the vilification of Eze is a bit strong, as he obviously had to go deep to get the ball. There was no one running to make space so he could pass and he was forced into running down blind alleys himself. He basically took one for the team. Even though it was a relatively gutsy performance there were a couple of players who did very little/nothing: that is more worrying than trying to run and trying to play, as Eze did.

Unfortunately it was Eze,he isn’t helped by our set up,but he is not good at tracking back and is often caught in possession but he will improve

Eze was poor, and not for the first time.

I thought the 4-4-1-1 formation was designed around him, but he failed to have any real impact leaving JP too isolated upfront and not really offering much elsewhere.

Luka was poor again and wasn't always offering himself when the defence had the ball - which is surely his role in the team.

Jairo was a bit all over the place, positionally he is poor. Notice how forward he was when Tekkers scored in the 95th minute. Nice to see but surely he should have been further back.

Andros offers so little now, even defensively although fantastic cross.

Mitchell looked nervous but is still learning and it is difficult to criticise our back 4 after their efforts last night.

I think Jairo sort of knows positioning, but he is so slow that it doesn't matter. Eze, by contrast, looks unsure of where he's supposed to be, and so he is constantly caught between places. He should continue to be on the pitch constantly, the better to learn. The better a defender he can become, the more fluid will be our transition from defense to attack.

Luka & Eze for me, Mitchell thought he ran and ran his socks off but Clearly a pants perfomance all round apart from the two goals.
We were all sweating on holding on the the point and hiding behing our hands etc.

It was all hands to the pump defending and dont forget we're playing with a patched up 11 and yet we've still amassed more points at this stage of the season and that without fans!
Am not saying all is rosey but to beat a pretty football playing team which Brighton were last night & with those stats is nothing short of a miracle & amazing!

Am still buzzing! " There are Teachers and Pupils

Oh yeah that sonic boom echoing around the Amex when Tekkers hits it gives me goose bumps everytime!

In terms of Eze, I believe that I mentioned on HOL before he joined us that about 3 years ago I had heard that whilst he was blessed with excellent technical qualities he needed to improve on his work off the ball.It was felt he needed to add workrate and discipline to his game.

I don’t think any of us is calling out Eze it is just an observation of one particular game but it was clear that in a backs to the wall game Eze is not the best contributor. Every player has his strengths and weaknesses and when we are in attacking mode his contribution will be much more positive. Mind you it would be nice to see us in a more attacking mode !! COYP

Couple of things stand out from reading through this post.

1) Mitchell and Ward actually played pretty well. Their jobs were to cover the Brighton wing-backs and not to go steamimg off upfield.
OK, so Veltman scored, but that was due to Townsend standing around watching the game.

2) And more relevant to why we're playing football that is so excruciating to watch at the moment.
No MacArthur. Slagged off repeatedly on here over this season and last, but so vital to linking defence with attack.
Hope he's back soon.

Agree with that and also the work rate and forward drive of Schlupp
. However last night with the players we had available it was the only way to play after our last two performances we had to shut up shop and boy did it work COYP
