My kids arnt affected so looking from the outside here.
Is it a good idea for teachers to work out exam grades and why or why not. What is the alternative apart from sitting the exam, an extra year at school then exams or HMGs algorithms.
Difficult one especially for uni selection.
A parents eye view will be interesting.

Not a parent, but I would have thought that asking their teacher to grade their exam results would be like asking the local burglar to fit your home security.

What teacher is going to fail to many, even if deserving, and risk ruining their own reputation and career?

Teachers won't fail anyone. They will be under pressure to give high grades. The grades will be higher than average, there will then be complaints when the algorithm knocks the grades down. There will be court cases etc, as are ongoing here from our predicted grades.

2023 will see the biggest influx of students going to University ever. Over the next couple of years there will be an above average drop out rate from University by students who don't understand what their course is about, followed by the highest failure rate for degrees ever three and four years from the Great Influx of 23 as those who have winged it in years 1 and 2 get found out at exam time (exams, what's that innit? Never done none of them old skool things before).

And then everyone will Blame Boris.

Living down here does have some advantages. At least you can see them cry.

I can understand why they're working it this way, but concur with others that the grades are unlikely to reflect reality, and that may well catch up with students later down the line.

The pressure will be from the Heads of Schools. There will be a LOT of top-down pressure to grade upwards. And lets not forget the corruption angle. Would imagine a lot of teachers receiving some rather splendid presents.

Slightly amazed that after de-professionalising the teaching profession for years (lower grades/qualifications in order to enter the profession), SATs testing to taking away the input of teachers assessments,...the present Government now choose to suddenly find teachers are professional once again.
Predicted grades. Isn't that whole concept a bit of a sham ? A bit like giving someone a full driving licence for getting a high score in the Theory test.

I'm sure school leavers will do very in their Deliveroo/courier jobs.
Else universities will have to take any prospective candidates they can, in order to recoup recent financial losses. Drop-out numbers in the first year will be very high

How else can they grade the chavs then?
Last year they used their own algorithms and that got thrown because of teachers complaints.
If tons of kids fail in the next few years the teachers who graded them were obviously too lenient.

I think that pretty much none of the systems keep everyone happy. In Ireland there will be a choice of predicted grades and exams. You can choose to take the highest result of the two choices.

Maybe that means that teachers give crap Mark's then so the kids want to prove they are better. Bit strange offering either or though results wise as in the grown up world that doesnt happen. Another false example of how it is.

I think the exam results are out in the next few days.

There are a number of articles in different papers about record numbers of students dropping out of university.

This is the (COVID) group that were awarded A levels based on their teachers expectations rather than exam results.

At the time someone on here predicted that if they were too generous these kids would struggle at University and probably drop out with a load of student debt, it appears to be the case.

I am half expecting there will be a class action lawsuit against the education department by these students, "your teacher made me go to Oxbridge when actually I was a thickie. "

Lets hope some commonsense comes back into the marking.
