Took me a while to find it: it’s 50-50s. He’s scared of them. Goes in reluctantly, if he feels up to it, not even half of half-heartedly - perhaps to avoid picking up a graze, and without fail loses out and meekly tracks back with his ‘what do you want, I’m not a defender’ strut.

I think it's grossly unfair of you to point to a cowardly fear of 50/50s as Van Aanholts achilles heel, and I feel you are quite wrong to do so.

You've totally overlooked his awful positioning, terrible reading of the game, sloppy use of the ball and all-pervasive 'couldn't give a f***' attitude.

And you have totally overlooked how much better he is going forward than Mitchell, his good link up play with Zaha and his ability to find the net every so often!

Give the man some credit. As much as he has some defensive issues, he is a pretty good wing back. The issue for him is that Roy sets us up so defensively that he is finding it hard to show his strengths at the moment.

Some people are like Slinkies … not really good for anything, but you can’t help smiling when you see one tumble down the stairs.

No good being an attacking full back and not being able to pass the ball to a fellow player at the end of moves.

Will have to agree to disagree. It was always highly debatable whether his attacking attributes actually counter balanced his defensive faults, but now the former has disappeared whilst the latter has increased. And he doesn't seem to give a flying one. He knows he's off soon.

Was expecting an exclusive wide angle camera shot of the back of his foot.

He is quite simply a defender who is not very good at defending. He should only play when the opposition don’t have a decent right winger and then I agree, he is beneficial to the team because of his forward movement.
