The Bricklayers is still there. Back in my yoot, I rarely ventured past the Coach and Horses / Three Tuns, so if I got as far as the Bricklayers I was really on it !

My wife and I used to frequent 'Dizzy's Diner' in Beckenham from time to time back in the 80s and I understand it is still in existence.

The mother was a charming lady who had lost her husband and was living alone. We did extend an invitation to accompany us from time to time.
I am befuddled by the reference to "Tom".

When I started this thread I didn’t expect it to meander towards your favourite haunts of yesteryear. But, it's fun to read nevertheless.

So, on this theme, does anyone remember The Tarantula club, or my favourite, Under The Olive Tree in South Croydon, just past the old Classic cinema if memory serves?

Dad and I watched games standing on the muddy slope of the Holmesdale Road end. He cheered and I rattled.

Tom-the-Eagle is always up for something “a little different”

Not so sure. I know the report says we're healthier, but since I moved here 10 years ago I've been treated for cancer and been diagnosed with an incurable illness, which after 2 stem cell transplants, is thankfully on hold for the time being. I assume, however, these things would have got me wherever I was living.

Still, happiier here than I would be in Croydon now. Never lived there, but started my working life at Croydon Airport in 1963 before moving to the RAC in Lansdowne Road until 1969.

I have to say I thoroughly enjoyed being in Croydon at that time, especially my forays to Under The Olive Tree club in South Croydon.

Blimey! Hope you are keeping well. Love Midhurst area, take care mate

So were some of my erstwhile girlfriends, some of whom had seen more ceilings than Michelangelo.

Just not with you, eh Willo?

With reference to the Cluedo comment earlier, I can imagine that if Willo was a character in that game it would always have the same conclusion. Captain Willo did it, in the library, with the dictionary.

Back on topic, I used to love it in Croydon until I moved away when I was 18. Came back every weekend to play football and spent the Summer Holidays (I was a student) living back there with a neighbour having got a job for the Summer on a building site around the area. Not sure if they're still there but I literally spilt a bit of blood on the sites that were building the swimming pool in Purley, and the motel place in South Croydon attached to the back of a pub.

Haunt of choice was the Stag and Hounds and still get a short lived wistful moment getting off at East Croydon for Palace games, or a longer more prolonged sense of relief when passing through East Croydon without stopping.

Wouldn't swap where I am now but have fond memories of the place, warts and all.

Living down here does have some advantages. At least you can see them cry.

I'm OK thanks Spider. It's everybody else.

Glad you like Midhurst - you're not one of those crazy motorcyclists who roar through here at 6am every Sunday on the A272 road of death by any chance?

Haha at the age of 64 hardly! Never ridden a motorbike in my life. We get the same along A264, must be something about the Sussex countryside ( although not much of that around Horsham now)

Those were the days. Such fond memories.

Now, if I'm not safely tucked up with a book and a mug of cocoa by 9.30, I am severely disciplined by Matron.
