I've tried asking this question a few times and getting Roy's ardent supporters to lay down a benchmark of what success looks like.

For me, finishing higher than Sheffield United, West Brom, and Fulham won't represent a successful season. The narrative that staying up by any means mark some kind of miracle is simply not true anymore.

Trying to make it objective. We have:

The 9th biggest wage bill
The 15th most expensively assembled squad.

So somewhere between 9th and 15th wouldn't be unreasonable.

Given we are in our 8th year in the premiership, and our finishes have been 11th, 10th, 15th*, 14th, 11th, 12th, and 14th. (*for the cup final). I don't think would be unreasonable to claim that 14th with poor cup performance would represent a very poor season. 11th would represent a very good season. Any higher than 11th would be excellent.

Roy's remaining zealots will point out that after 26 games we are 13th. However, we have 12 games left, only 3 of which are against teams in the bottom half of the table. We did manage to obtain a staggering 15 points from the teams coming up in the first half of the season. In the run in I doubt we will get more that 9 in a best case scenario. 15th or 16th is all we have to look forward to this year.

Good post.

I know some may have an unrealistic hope for “total football” but I think most Palace fans are happy with pragmatic football with the occasional victory over the big boys. I personally love us being a “party pooper” for any of the top six and regarded as a tough game in their calendar.
But the thing I can’t bare is the lack of ambition or attacking intent. If that’s limited to corners and free kicks when needed - I wouldn’t mind that. We’re not even having a go any more! A balance can be struck between defending well and getting on the ball and playing with some intent - as Fulham showed last week. If they can do it why can’t we? I believe it’s the Manager.

After such a distinguished career I would like the club to recognise the good job he has done in bringing Premier League stability and create an ambassadorial/support role for him. I would also like Roy to bow out on a high and hope we get to the magic 40 points and then start playing some football.

But I suspect Roy (given what we have seen of Roy’s reluctance to be proactive or change the mental approach to games) he would stick to playing the same old sh!te.

For clubs without hundreds of millions to spend there is a Faustian aspect to playing in this league and I think the current situation is part of that.
Looking at the managers of the clubs around us, Espirito-Santo, Bielsa, Dyche and Hasenhuttl they all seem to receive more praise for their achievements than Roy.
Having had a look at a Brighton site they would swap their style for our points. It’s a long standing debate as to whether football is a points or entertainment driven industry - in our case it seems clear.

Fact- many teams of our size have tried to play expansive football and failed.
Stoke had Pulis for ages in PL and what happened when they tried to change?
Swansea tried and succeeded for a while where are they now?
Sheffield Utd did well last season and now?
The list goes on, what I want to see is passion in our play which IMO is lacking right now!!

I agree. We do not want to be like Fulham or Brighton and play expansive football but lose every game. But I would expect more ambition against the lower teams and to look like we are able to beat them. Overall our play looks over negative every game regardless of who we are playing and our passing is shocking. Roy seems happy with less than half the points from 5 games from teams at the bottom. I expected 9 from those 15 and that should have been easily achievable. The flashes like the 2 goals against Brighton are not enough out of 180 minutes of football.

My expectations, more than 1 shot on target a game . Doesn't have to be total football , just more attacking. Must be some sort of middle ground between total football and pure defensive way we play

There doesn’t according to Roy’s relatives on here. Either one or two shots on goal per month and survival, or the alternative of relegation and then the football conference.

From a personal perspective I don't ever remember a season where (Brighton aside) I've taken so little joy from the games we've won. So often it feels like we've cheated somehow rather than earned the win. The occasional lucky win is great, but when every result seems lucky you start to question how sustainable that is.

As shocking as it might seem to some, I actually enjoy seeing our players pass the ball to each other and do some neat interplay, even when they don't score. I also enjoy seeing our flair players get the ball in the final third more than twice a game and trying something creative even when it doesn't produce goals. On top of that, I even enjoy seeing us have some shots and creating some drama in the opposing box. I know for some this might not seem important as it doesn't generate goals and points, but call me a romantic, I actually like watching football and not just the vidiprinter.

Think you have hit my nail on the head ;-) I’m sure Covid has had a lot to do with how we are playing with matches coming thick and fast for which we suffer more than most in this division with so many injuries, an old squad and a small squad. I just don’t get any enjoyment watching us anymore, but don’t get me wrong I love seeing us get 1 or 3 points rather than 0 and realise this is mainly down to Hodgson playing so defensively with this team. And in a lot of cases a lot of luck. But, my goodness it’s so hard to watch these days. I want us to have cup runs and play entertaining football, is that to much to ask for? There was a time when if we were playing Man Utd like tonight I would be looking forward to it, but I’m not and that is so disappointing. Im realistic in that we will never be a Man City, but my goodness do we have to put up with this dross we are playing just to survive in this division? :-(

I expect some encouragement and excitement in each game.

Some will result in loss, some a draw and some a win.

What I don't expect is constant 20% possession EACH game, no shots on target and not being able pass the ball. Which is what we having getting for quite a while.

I don't expect a cup run, pushing for European places and even a Top 10 finish.

I don't think that's a lot to ask for.

My expectations are to compete.

There's no shame in drawing at home 0-0 to Fulham. There's plenty to worry about when it is clear the management have actually set us up to play for exactly that result. What message does it send to the players when all week it is drilled into them how to stop Fulham from scoring ?

I enjoyed watching the games away to Arsenal, West Ham and home vs Spurs. We didn't win any of them but we played reasonably well and with some intent. The performance against Brighton was embarrassing and only celebrated because of who we were playing.

The best I have seen us play was the first 45 minutes at home to Liverpool and we ended up being 3-0 down at half time. As somebody else has already mentioned, find the middle ground between being ultra defensive and leaving ourselves wide open. For that to happen we need to be more aggressive, fitter and press a little more than we do.

What do I expect from Palace? Its a good question, and one we are all asking ourselves and each other more frequently.

Personally, I expect:

1. The club be properly, professionally and sustainably run above and beyond everything else. No big gambles, no vanity trips. just make sure the club is still here for the next generation.

2. That supporters not be priced out. I would rather have a smaller budget for the team than see people priced out.

3. That non-corporate supporters be the priority in all major decisions. Again, I'd rather restrict the club financially than turn Selhurst into the Emirates.

4. That the players and staff give their all, regardless of how good they may be, where they might be within their own careers, and the tactics used at any one time.

Anything less is a failure, and everything else is a bonus, though of course it is reasonable to ask for better football than we have seen recently.

Football, as with life, encompasses every type of expectation from the hard nosed to the unrealistic.

From my perspective I think Palace have been relatively fortunate over the last few years. Fundamentally it's been the correct managemental change allied to the fear in teams created from one player that has kept us playing at the top table.

What we can be assured of is that we have people at the top of the club who have presided over above average success for us.....and most of us remember how bad it was before them.

In truth we are a yo-yo club that is undergoing a good period. We have taken advantage of that to finally produce a top level academy, which does increase the club's reputation.

However, we don't have the stadium of a big club and realistically for us to move forward and expect improvements in play allied to league position we need big money to come in.

Sure, we can point at more attractive and attacking teams, but the number of instances of teams outside the top six playing attractive football without big money is rare.

Usually they end up relegated within two or three seasons because opponents work them out.

So personally I think the comments Roy recently made about expectations, money and style of play were very accurate.

Next season we will be without Zaha and the look of our squad will be different. I think the lack of noise coming from the top means that they want to ally that change with a change in management.

It's a close call due to Roy's age and a possible sense that his players are less motivated than before....whatever happens I have my fingers crossed that we will do well in the transfer markets.

When people complain about 'average' they often forget that half are performing below expectations and to consistently perform above the average you require an edge....outside of personnel (who are always temporary) that's money, pure and simple.

To answer the question what do I expect is pretty much what we have at the moment. This is based on the fact that we are a small Premiership club with very little money saddling us with less than the very best players and because of our circumstances have had to be very cautious in our approach to life in the Premiership in order to remain within.
In order for me to expect anything different our circumstances would have to be different. We would need a great influx of money in order to change the quality of our players . Like the way Man City changed Chelsea changed with an influx of money.
I doubt this will happen to us so I expect much more of the same but with a gradual turnover of players and depending on the type of players the hierarchy chose to buy will dictate the style.
I do expect however, whatever happens , us to remain in the Premiership by doing whatever it takes to achieve it style wise.COYP
