the best thing that can come out of this is that Roy gets a pat on the pack and retains some respect for achieving a decent points total in his final season, arguably vindicating a hugely depressing style of football during a difficult time for our club.

And then we can press reset and get a new manager in before the style of football infects our club to a point that is unsalvageable.

Roy has done a great job keeping us up on a shoestring budget, for sure. But as the stats show, this has largely, if not soley, been down to Zaha.

Without him, would we still be here? I doubt it. The club as a whole, and not just Roy, have failed to find a solution. For too long we have hidden behind the Zaha effect, disguising our obvious shortcommings.

We mustered twice as many shots on goal yesterday than the previous two matches put together - 0 shots against Fulham and 2 against Brighton. Is that anything to shout about, especially against a lacklusture Man Ure? No.

On the positive, we have seemed to have rediscovered our resillience and determination in defence. When we're that bad going forward, this is a must.

For that Roy should be given credit, but lets not be deluded by the decent 11 pts from 7 games return.

Context of our injury list has papered over the cracks. Pleased with an improved performance with the ball yesterday.
Roy has my eternal gratitude for the stability he has brought - I hope we get the Magic 40 and he bows out knowing we appreciate the job he’s done.
Another season of his overly cautious football would be depressing.

I agree with these sentiments.

I assume that whoever believes that Roy is no longer our best bet for manager, knows who we should replace him with.
I can't think of anyone who would be available, within budget and indeed would be a step up.

We move in the direction of our thoughts.
Just think a little.

Why? That's the Board's job. I'm happy to wait and see what the board decides and will back whoever is manager come the first game of next season.

Not pulling you up specifically, but...

..I read this a lot. The board did their job. They employed Roy Hodgson. They are not seeking change as far as we know. Why would they speculate who would be our best bet for manager, when they chose Roy Hodgson as our best bet for manager? If you want a different manager, fine. Offer your suggestions for debate. But to just say "Roy out" is not reasonable on it's own.

By the way, if the board give Roy another contract, will you back him?

I generally work off the theory that to stay up you need to beat then 10 bottom half teams at home and draw with them away to get 40 points. Anything else is a bonus, but we should be aiming for about 50points.

Therefore, the bare minimum we needed from this run of games was 12 points.

On that basis, 11 points can't be described as a fantastic return as we now need to go to the bigger clubs and pick up points.

Our run in is dreadful. Fortunately, Fulham now need 11 points from 11 games to catch us. That's probably a bridge too far for them and we just need to aim to draw a few more games. It's going to a dreadful end to the season.

The real shame is we can't shift the mentality of looking over our shoulders at avoiding relegation and start looking up the league to see how high we can finish.

Roy out is a perfectly reasonable stance if you are not happy with the manner in which we play football and there are many who feel that way. Why do we have to come up with alternatives when we have absolutely zero impact on the decision of who should replace him. Wanting Roy out and who replaces him are two entirely separate subjects.

Would I back Roy for another year? Not with my money I won’t but the team will still get my support as it always does. The next time I visit SP will be when we have a different manager.

If the last question on your post is the 'edit' aimed at me, then yes, I would back Hodgson next season if the Board gave him an extension. Why?

Such extension might mean:
1) The summer window will see another small move toward a younger squad with perhaps 2 or 3 youngsters brought in and possibly a more experienced player in their mid 20s and the Board want Hodgson's proven safety-first approach to keep the club in the PL for one more year

or

2) The Board believe Hodgson is the best option available to them to oversee a more radical change to youth.

or

3) The other managerial options available don't measure up to what the board is looking for.

Do I want Hodgson to stay? I don't have any strong feeling either way although there's always that part of one that wants to see the next chapter, a young and charismatic manager who will take one's club on an exciting journey (we can dream).

Finally, in response to the OPs thread opener, I don't see 11 points out of the last 7 games as a 'fantastic return', given the opposition we played. It was an ok return - we should have done better against Burnley (probably our worst performance of the season IMO) and put up a better display against Leeds.

The problem I find with so much of the Roy out, argument, is the attitude that . Palace, have found themselves playing negative backs to the wall football ,on many occasions , purely because of Roy.
When the problem is that the squad he works with is just not strong enough to not have to play that way if we are to remain a top league competitor .
The truth being . Roy has done what he can ,with what he has got.
The bottom line is without drastic restructuring of the squad, there is not a manager you could hang your hat on to actually be successful in any real way, at CPFC.
It’s strange so many of the candidates put up are failures in their own right. Because they are supposed to be preferable to someone that has succeeded in difficult circumstances.
This is a repeat of what happened at Stoke. Teams like us need to be able to fall back on basics, when needed. It’s a fact we have to do it to often right now. So answer better players. Not get rid of the manager that gets performances out of average players, where many, including most put forward here for the job , wouldn’t.
