Dear old Murray Walker. He brought great enthusiasm and energy to the commentary box doing a very difficult job. Probably the last of that band of commentators I grew up listening to .. Bill McLaren, Kenneth Wolstenholme, Brian Moore, Peter Allis, Peter O'Sullevan, John Arlott, Brian Johnston, David Coleman, Dan Maskell...

You're right to name all these, each had a distinctive style that suited the sport they spoke for. Another I would add to your list, although his grand Prix commentaries date back to the 1950s when I first saw the occasional race shown on the BBC, is Raymond Baxter.

It helped that most of them not only spoke well but they also had a very good knowledge of the English language as well.

Just for fun I watched the Sky documentary about the history of GP racing again last evening. And the voice of Raymond Baxter describing Fangio in his pomp was marvellous to hear again.

Yes, back in the 50s and 60s Murray Walker was more likely to be found commentating on motorbike racing. Raymond Baxter was very much the voice of motor racing pre-1970s.
