It is a bit of a dilemma that the club has got itself in to due to lack of investment in the squad in previous years and the long term reliance on loan players. The club has to make changes due to the age of the squad and the fact that so many contracts are coming to an end. There clearly is need to refresh in defence, midfield and upfront. These changes will have to be gradual, otherwise there is a huge risk to our status, too many changes at the same time will put us in the same vulnerable position that teams coming up from the championship face with inexperienced PL players who need time to adjust to the pace, skill and physicality that is required in the PL. Then there is the change of Manager that so many are asking for as well as a change in our playing style, IMO these changes will be too many all at once. There is a very strong case for a safe pair of hands, like Roy to see us through this process, assuming of course he wants to stay. There are so many examples of teams in league 1 who have attempted such a shift in style players and new management and it did not work out for them as Dougie Freeman will verify.

McCarthy still good.

Unfortunately Townsend not. He needs to be replaced for someone who offers something going forward, most importantly goals.

Disagree. McCarthy is constantly crook and a 6/10 performer at best when he's not.

And Townsend is just about topping out assist charts right now. He's limited, of course, but worth keeping around.

I would agree that they should have written over the period of his previous contract. My concern would be if were stupid enough to extend his contract on the current reported salary 120K/per week then that would cost us just a tad under 6.240 mil over 12 months and he is not worth it, so he must go along with Sakho two of the worst buys Parish has ever made!

plus 13.8% employer national insurance!!

Didn't someone from the trust say that parish said numerous players who are out of contract in the summer have already penned new deals but the club just hasn't announced due to certain stipulations with players sponsors etc

I thought he said that the club don't always announce contract renewals straight away due to confidentiality or commercial reasons although I'm not sure what either of them are although it could be down to the fact that the club's nickname is being changed from Eagles to Dad's Army

I dunno, I just feel like we're locked into a never ending cycle of non-achievement. We don't play attractive football and we're never going to win anything with this squad/manager/board. It feels like we are just killing time until we get relegated, and then the whole cycle starts again... Sorry to be negative, but that's how I feel.

sad that the most exciting prospect on the cards right now is a promotion campaign

I can't remember a time quite like this in all fairness, where so much or so little could change in one go. We are in the land of a thousand variables, but even if you map out the main possible permutations that might occur this summer, it is entirely possible to form contrasting, but valid and reasonable views on each.

1. Most of the squad stays, one or two new signings come in.

2. Four or five players leave, three or four new ones come in but they aren't much of an upgrade.

3. Lots of player (more than 7) leave, lots (more than 5 arrive) but aren't much of an upgrade.

4. Four or five players leave, we take advantage of a new FFP cycle, reduced wage bill and the end of old transfer fee installments and sign three or four players who seem a real upgrade on what we have.

5. Lots of players leave, we start a new FFP cycle etc, and push ourselves as far into debt as the regulations allow to sign more than five new players who seem a real upgrade, and who we hope will be the core of the team for three years or more.

6. Some mixture of the above.

Personally I think it will be a mixture of 2 and 4 from the above. More of the squad will be retained than released, we will use the loan market wisely (Gallagher), the free transfer market as well as we can (Lundestram) then push the boat out a bit, but not too far, for a couple of new players. Thing is, for each of these options you can quite sensibly argue that it makes sense for Hodgson to stay (even if just for one more year), or to go.

Yep! And it will be interesting to see which one or combination occurs etc.

Also there's a good chance he'd hold the gun the wrong way and shoot himself. Result!

I honestly don’t think a massive overhaul is needed. 4 or 5 quality new additions could make a huge difference. Half of the players we all moan about don’t play anyway (Sako, Wickham, Bats, McCarthy, Hennessy) so ANY quality additions would be a significant improvement (providing the new manager actually plays them! Oops wrong thread).
I feel we need to just draw a line through the CB situation and accept it hasn’t worked for 3 seasons and it’s not suddenly going to change - let him go and give someone else a try. That horse has well and truly been flogged and he’s not suddenly going to be the player we want him to be - time to move on.

A lot has been made about the age of our squad but let’s not overlook the benefits of experienced players both on the pitch (seeing out games with nouse and game management) and off the pitch leading by example with their professionalism and attitude.

I honestly feel we don’t need a massive overhaul - we do have decent players and a few wise decisions around who we bring in could see further progress for us.

Just when CB is starting to find some form in front of goal? Doesn’t make sense to me. At very least, he’s a useful bench option to give us something different.
