...one of the worst numbers of goals conceded in the whole league. Above the bottom two teams, in the table, there is only one other team who has leaked in more goals than us (Leeds). And Leeds are way above us in terms of Goal-difference and points earned. Of course, the numbers can be misleading. Numbers are skewed by the kickings we took from Liverpool, Leicester et al. And the fact we are so high in the table is a testament to many days of heroic defensive performances. Many a 0-0 or a 0-1 has got us to safety. In this day and age, defense is the responsibility of the whole squad, not just the back four. Although, Benteke has been good at preventing goals, our defence really starts at mid-field. So what would you change ? is it our 'keeper ? our back four ? our formation ? midfield ? our distribution when we have the ball ? Is our use of the offside trap inappropriate ? our line too high ? our defence against corners & other set-pieces ? would a different manager get a better defensive performance from these fellas ? or worse ? We are playing a strong Everton today. If we let in a goal or two, we Will HAVE one of the WORST number of goals conceded of all the top 18 teams in the league. Our setup puts our defence under massive pressure for most of every game so if the defence has an off game, which is bound to happen, then there's going to be a few batterings.

1. We have the SIXTH worst goals conceded record (47 goals) - you have overlooked Newcastle (50) and Southampton (53). Of course, we may well overtake them tonight! I think Joe_ has put his finger on a major issue and I quote:
Owing to our slow and aged defence and defensive midfield, we can't afford to defend too far up the pitch otherwise the oppo will get behind us either down the flanks or with balls over the top. We haven't had a settled back four at any time during this season. Indeed, I can't recall a game in which we played our strongest defensive line-up (because of our horrendous injury record). What to do? A change of manager on its own is unlikely to make things better. We need: If we got the four of them, the manager (whoever that might be) would at least have options as to how to set the team up.

I just watched a replay of the play off final v Watford on Sky Sports mix. What a goal line headed clearance by Joel Ward in the last minute of extra time. He epitomises what our club is all about. He may not be the most gifted but he never knowingly let’s us down.

Good post, but an expensive gesture if those 4 improvements to the squad then spent the bulk of the season in the physio room after suffering mysterious injuries in training. Get that issue sorted and we will be a safe mid table team that never flirts with relegation and has the odd flutter in the Cups and Europe. BTW the absence of Tomkins has been a major factor in our goal concession. A Cahill-Tomkins defence filled the lines in front of them with confidence to play better and kept them bl00dy goals out. Like Liverpool are finding, lose important characters in defence and the fabric crumbles.

I don’t imagine Hennessy would of got such sympathy!

As for Guaita, He's a great shop stopper, positions himself well BUT he doesn't command his area and that has IMHO led to some unnecessary goals against. I'd still have him as our no.1 but would like to see Butland given a few games once we're mathematically safe.

Not having a pop at VG just pointing out an obvious - Chelsea's 3rd goal will be repeated regularly against us. Put the ball onto the edge of the 6 yard box and VG won't come. Win the header and it's a nailed on goal. Burnley clearly targeted us at corners by flooding the 6 yard box and their 2nd goal was perfectly executed. VG is by no means the only goalie who doesn't command his area but we do seem to concede more often as a result.
