I agree that retaining PL football should always be cause for celebration for a club with our means; however, now we are now very likely safe (albeit not mathematically) I hope we can push on in these final 8 games and show to prospective players that we are a club who do not just want to settle for survival but who want to aim higher, even if ultimately it might be outside our reach. To be honest though, I'd be quite happy to see 8 more entertaining games like last night.

Every year we have this.

I don't think any team should take their foot off the gas until they cannot be relegated.
Fulham still have 21 points to play and the other teams below us 24. Fulham are 12 points behind.

Does this need explaining further?

We are highly unlikely to be relegated, but I don't want to get anywhere near it. With our coming fixtures, we won't get too many more points I suspect.

Correct and Roy will be thinking the same, meaning that giving new squad members a longish run in the 1st team will be limited. Suspect we will be mathematically safe with about 3 or so games to go. I realise that will only be a couple of choices including Mateta and youngsters but personally would be nice to see them. However if the players will not have their contracts renewed until the end of the season as mentioned by Andros it might mean change is afoot ? Suspect we won't get higher up the table from here but only drop 1 or 2 places come the end. Biggest goal this season will then be achieved as others have said. Think next season might be tougher though. COYP !!

Aston Villa were, up until recently, part of that august clique.

Before Ancelloti, Everton were looking like candidates for the drop.

Many teams have won the title and been relegated...either before or after....Man City, Leicester, Blackburn Rovers,

Some small clubs have had a fantastic run in the Prem, surprised everybody and been up near the top 4 in the table, for a little while...Hull, Blackpool, Watford, QPR, Stoke ....and then back to the shyte.

Every team is standing on a trap-door.

When we finish fourth from bottom, that is an amazing achievement. And i have a bottle of champagne ready for the day Arsenal go down.

Call me old fashioned, but i believe in the 'big stadium full of fans' school of being a big or small club. Money from season tickets. And by that reckoning, even Charlton have a thousand more seats than us. And where have that club been recently ?

all except Arse have been relegated from the top division

So they got rid of Pulis. Be careful what you wish for....

It seems to me that "be careful what you wish for" is only used by those that don't have a cogent argument although it's normally Charlton that gets mentioned

Sounds a fine idea. But "sounds" is the crucial word. The question is how we do it in practice. Do we tell prospective recruits that we're planning to spend £15m on new players, that we're thinking of having a new stand, that we're going to play a more attacking game, that youngsters will be given their opportunities? Would they believe us?

In case you misread me, I'm most definitely not intending to belittle what you wrote. But theory and practice are very different animals.

A lot of interesting posts. My take is we have been punching above our weight for a number of years. We can all hope to achieve a Leicester or even a West Ham from this season. With a good run of form it is not beyond us to reach those heights but could we realistically expect to stay there? Burnley had a fine season recently but have since found their level again. Shef Utd took the division by storm last season but we all know their fete this season. Examples are countless of teams that flatter to receive. Does that count as the next level having achieved it for one season? The reality it we are at the maximum of our potential give or take 2/3 places.
The next level for me is to maintain our premiership status regenerate the squad through a mix of younger purchases and our academy bearing fruit. And to progress to the later stages of the cup competitions (and hopefully win one before my time is up).

Staying up for a ninth year is not mediocrity, its a fine achievement which the club has waited over a century for, obtained through a little luck but a lot more hard work, realism and professional expertise. Leaving aside any reservations about the style of play, the long term results are plainly excellent.

To those asking for more 'ambition', I can only refer you once again to the irrefutable correlation between budget and league position. We are, as a plain matter of fact, comfortably outside the top ten economically. If you have a method for bridging that gap then congratulations, you are a genius, and probably going to be very rich, because nobody else has been able to crack that little riddle.

To those who persist with the argument that after six/seven/eight seasons we should be looking to 'kick on to the next level', I can only suggest a closer look at how the finances actually work. We could stay in the league for twenty years but if we are the fourteenth or fifteenth richest club for each of those twenty years then our length of stay is irrelevant.

This is a fine achievement. The fact that it is frequently awful to watch is another matter altogether.

Gotta agree with the others too - spot on!!!

I'm very glad we've got another year but what i want is the stadium renovated. Stoke, Hull, Blackpool, Sunderland, Derby, Bolton, Wigan all have stadiums that are fit for top flight football and we have an open sewer in the Arthur and a main stand dating back to God knows when.

If your referring to Premier relegation only, Brighton have never been relegated from the Premier.

Yes, an excellent post from you BTP. Everything about our time in the Premier League and hopes for the future have already been written here.

We all have our own views about how things should be, but on the whole I suspect that we'll all be cheering on whoever is playing and whoever is coaching them next year.

The big problem for us though is how to finance our development. Pep G is quoted today of saying that he will be happy to spend £100m on a new player. We can but dream.

It's what makes the Palace story remarkable. We are where we are through masses of effort and hard work. How different things would be if we could buy success.

Dad and I watched games standing on the muddy slope of the Holmesdale Road end. He cheered and I rattled.

Because we all know football didn’t exist before the Premier League.

If you listen to Parish in interviews he's given in the last couple of years he talks openly about wanting to gradually build something at the club, but also that his ambition does go beyond just staying in the PL. What we are not clear on is what the plan is that's being built. It definitely seems to involve the academy and it does also appear the focus is moving away from household names to up and coming players from home and abroad, with a lot of responsibility being placed on Dougie's shoulders. The PL table by and large will typically reflect financial input which makes it tough for a club of our size, but I'm confident that the foundations are being laid and that we have room for optimism.

We are unlikely to be regularly competing in the top 10, but as an established PL side it would be good to see us showing more bravery against the teams in and around us and not playing 95% of our games as if we're the underdogs.

This is quite an in-depth interview with Parish from a couple of years ago in which he talks quite a bit about where he came from and what he wants the club to achieve: [Link]
