Not really if you believe the conspiracy theories, or Mohamed al Fayed. I echo the comments about the queen but my forlorn hope is that the monarchy ends with her passing. The uniforms, bullsh*t protocol, hypocrisy, snobbery, the gravy train and Prince Andrew should all be consigned to history, then the people would be sovereign and this toxic dump of a country might get the regeneration it needs - won't happen but one can but hope.

I used to think like you when I was younger. But now I can see the value of the incredible historical significance of our royal heritage.

They are a dysfunctional family for sure and some change is needed. You're right to identify Andrew as one of the family who should be put out to pasture. There are many of the traditions kept on by the Queen that should be cut out too. I mean, a piper playing outside every morning, something Victoria started I think. Stop. There's also a lot of sycophantic behaviour that is often over the top.

But, to see how that funeral was conducted yesterday was a credit to the country and certainly made me feel proud to be British. We showed the world how these things should be done and it was a great commercial to attract more visitors when conditions allow. I don't think a Presidential Republic would work anywhere near as well.

Charles will change things, assuming he takes the reigns next. Although he's one of the most extravagant of them I reckon he'll prune public expenditure and bring things more in line with century 21. William certainly will when it's his turn. Not in my lifetime sadly.

Anyway, please don't let this toxic country get you down. The pubs are open now so go and have a beer. Would've been a lot worse here if Hitler had moved into Buckingham Palace.

Dad and I watched games standing on the muddy slope of the Holmesdale Road end. He cheered and I rattled.

nice replies to my republican outburst - unusually respectful, keep it up chaps. A friend of mine was doing British Constitution A Level years ago, he suggested to the teacher that as the queen's constitutional role was only ritual it could just as easily be performed by a carrot, I've always thought the constitutional carrot idea was underrated - it would have to be a very big carrot or it might not be taken seriously enough. I wouldn't go for a parsnip as it doesn't have the same ring, and aubergines and courgettes would have something of the 'Norman yolk'.

Seriously, you wouldn't need anything, I'd seriously like all this devotion directed towards the common good, not a dodgy representation of it - and I really think the class system is still going strong and the monarchy underpins it. I genuinely believe its influence dumbs us down, it's why we don't win the world cup (public schools generally play rugby, while state schools play football) and have been left behind as a manufacturing economy (not enough respect for engineering and trades). Empty poshness can be mistaken for something much grander than it actually is, and that is essentially what royalty is about.

Once the Queen goes I hope Charles tells the public he will reign for 5 years and then abdicate in favour of William.

During Charles reign I would expect the government to make constitutional changes that are sorely needed. Charles could become a Muslim and sit on the throne but cannot be a catholic.

The Church of England needs to be disestablished so that the Archbishop of Canterbury is the head and nothing to do with the royal family. The monarch should be free to practice whatever religion they like or none at all.

As for the royal family I would make it clear that the Monarch and spouse and the heir are the only people who should be involved in public duties. All other members are free to do what they like and at their own expense.

As a republican I would like to abolish the Monarchy however I don't think the public are ready for that and as the Australians realised what do you replace it with, President Failed Politician, President Nobody, President Boaty McBoatface
