Fair enough, Chelski has a more expensive squad (and better players), but why give up even before kick-off?
The 4-4-2 is simply NOT working, adding players out of position, we are sometimes an embarrassment to watch.
All this comes down to the management...

That’s a good point about the right hand side, makes me wonder why Clyne doesn’t get a game.

Absolutely.
One of the issues is that our movement is not the best when we are in possession, hence the player who is being "Pressed" has limited options.

Furthermore we just have no thrust at all down our right side.Ayew drifts inside and of course Ward is not a player to make forward bursts down the flanks so our attacks are either through the middle or down the left. We don't have that energetic overlapping full-back to provide us with an extra dimension.

As soon as I saw the old 4-4-2 formation with Benteke playing forwards with two good strikers left on the bench I knew that once again Roy was playing defensively and if a goal was scored it would be a miracle. Well Benteke did score but I hope next year the manager is more positive and plays Batshuayi and Mateta if they are still at the Club.

Lol benteke is better than both of them. He scored with one chance today. Can’t ask much more of him.

Of all the problems right now, CB isn’t one of the bigger ones.

Nice to see Roy accepting his part as usual

“I don't think what cost us the game the team was something that we as the management and coaching staff had requested from the players”

It didn’t actually appear that anything had been asked of the players and he sent them out with that formation (again). Failed to change it with any kind of speed when it clearly wasn’t working (again).

I can just imagine the Chelsea dossier on us.

Formation 4-4-2
Width - none
Slow starters. Aim to score early as they will sit off.

Roy and his “system” are looking more and more like a cassette in a digital age. Stevie Wonder can see Ayew and Eze the way they are isn’t the answer and granted Ward may not be the most forward thinking right back but I’d take him over the prancing pony PVA on the other side.

We’ve got full blown England Roy now. Looking old, confused and completely unable to accept that he may be part of the problem. He isn’t the whole problem by any means but for a world class “tactician” he doesn’t half come across as General Melchett in Blackadder -

“Precisely, because we’ve used that the last 17 times it exactly the last thing they will be expecting”

It is quite obvious teams know exactly how we are going to set up and play, unfortunately Roy doesn’t seem to be able/want to play any differently. So I can’t honestly see how he can stay on. Yes Chelsea will always be a class above us but at least give their manager something to think about.
What really got to me yesterday was at 3-0 game was well and truly over, why not give Mateta or Saki a run out. What more can Mateta do to get a start? Giving Saki game time would show the youngsters that we really are serious about bringing them through

What saddens me the most is that I was really buoyed after the final 30 minutes of the Everton match whereby Roy changed the formation and we looked a real threat taking the game to Everton. Eze played in the middle and was on the ball more, Schluppy was making direct runs etc etc.

There was no evidence of this however and the lack of on-field ambition with this management is infuriating.

Im sure the players would have been rolling their eyes when they heard about the 4-4-2 formation being used again as opposed to something more daring. Yes, there’s a chance it could backfire and leave us exposed but footballers will want to be part of a team playing exciting football I’m sure.

I don't often disagree with you but I think that I do this time. Giving an inexperienced youngster like Saki game time against a team playing like Chelsea were yesterday could well give him nightmares for weeks to come.

By all means give him some game time but perhaps the forthcoming match against Sheffield United might be more appropriate

We need two new CBs for next season. Dann Sakho and Cahill are done at this level. Tomkins is our best CB by some distance but is very injury prone. I'd rather see Kouyate back in midfield alongside a young player with lots of energy, Gallagher would be good and a new left back, Mitchell still has a lot to learn and isnt at the level yet.

I am on your 'Wavelength' apropos the need for replenishments in central defence.
I agree with your assessment of the players you highlighted.
Lack of pace and mobility and beaten in the air far too often at corners and set-pieces.

I’ve read all the posts about the game yesterday and follow the threads on this forum with great interest as a fan.

My point is just that, I’m a fan. Always have been and always will be. Saw my first live game way back in 79.

I’ve seen the good the bad and the ugly. Right now for the first time in my life I am struggling to watch us. I can take losing. I know we are unlikely to be a top 4 team and more likely to be in or around a relegation battle. I understand all the flaws of being a Palace supporter, but the last couple of season are just so so boring.
It’s Iceland England again and again. I watched Roy’s interview on MOTD and he was so negative. If he is like this it will of course rub off on the players. They look as bored as we do. There is no freedom, no chance to express themselves. That might be ok if we were rock solid at the back and hard to breakdown, but we are not. The way we play is making us look so slow and cumbersome.
On the rare occasions when we have had spells of having a go at teams we have shown that the players do have the capacity to do it.

Yesterday we had 1 fast attack, ball played in quick and we scored a great goal. Why then do we continue to play players out of position. Ayew is not a winger, Zaha not a striker etc.

I would like to see just for my sanity...

Guaita

Ward Cahill kelly Mitchell

McArthur /Luka Kouyate

Zaha Eze schlupp

Tekkers

I can’t possibly be any worse.

Just my view. I’m not sure how much longer I can take this current set up, I certainly won’t be going back even if restrictions are lifted, it takes me hours to get to the home games and I just can’t be arsed and I never thought I’d say that.

Agreed.

‘Start as you mean to go on’ isn’t a bad plan to follow in life....on on the pitch!

Match after match our players arrive fresh from the dressing room bereft of energy, enthusiasm and passion. The opposing teams nearly always ‘want it more’. So we concede early, retreat ever deeper and clearly have no plan B.

Roy may or may not have lost the dressing room, but his failure to bring on youth, show strategic flexibility snd inspire a will to win are no longer tolerable to those of us who remain ambitious for the future of the Eagles.

I've said all season Cahill is past it yet he seems to be one of Roy's faves. At least Cahill was honest to say he wasn't up to speed at the beginning of the season, but really, being not up to speed isn't good enough at this level is it? Kouyate is neither a decent CB or midfielder.
Two new Cb's should be made an absolute priority for next season.
