Regarding Benteke it seems perverse we should get another centre forward (Mateta). Hopefully this is a sign that Benteke is leaving.

Another striker is not what we need but, put simply, creativity.

By which I mean a midfield capable of holding the ball and bringing it forward. Passes attempted are either backwards, sideways or straight to an already closely marked forward.

The defence just boots it aimlessly even after a period of quasi 'playing it out from the back'.

We have two skilled performers (Zaha and Eze) but no idea how to use their skills. We have a left footed winger playing on the right and absolutely no midfield 'general'

People are blaming Eze for the first goal which is a bit rich as he shouldn't be helping out at the back, and was no worse than our accredited defenders.

New players and new manager can't come soon enough.

There was no evidence of this however and the lack of on-field ambition with this management is infuriating.

Im sure the players would have been rolling their eyes when they heard about the 4-4-2 formation being used again as opposed to something more daring. Yes, there’s a chance it could backfire and leave us exposed but footballers will want to be part of a team playing exciting football I’m sure.

Apparently not. Players are generally a bit dim and do not cope well with radical change. Roy knows that all too well.

Steam roll us in the first quarter and we're toast. Liverpool Burnley now Chelsea. Makes a good case for a cautious negative approach..?

To be fair, you were the one that wrote that you have no idea so I was quoting you.

"I have no idea what our total spend it (sic) "

This has the look of a wind up......

Have a Google first before you say I have no idea about how much we've spent.

Yes a really productive player over the years and a right bargain too at only £5.5 million pa.

Not trying to be rude but do you get the opportunity to attend live games? Where I sit we can all see the poor build up play that has starved Benteke of service. And now The Athletic has done the research

[Link]

(As of March) since Roy Hodgson’s first Premier League match in charge in September 2017, #CPFC had made 9.9 open-play crosses per game, fewest of any current top-flight side & third-lowest overall.

Benteke has 4 of his 6 goals this season from crosses

Two new Cb's should be made an absolute priority for next season.

I don't think CB's are our priority, frankly Cahill has exceeded my expectations since arriving at the club and has been one of our better performers generally. The Tomkins/Cahill combination at the back is I believe our best pairing. I said at the start of the season we needed a decent striker and a couple of fullbacks. We finally got a striker (Metata) who scored at his only start and it's costing us 3m just for the loan period, yet Roy won't start him. Who knows why? We bought by all accounts a good left back (Ferguson) yet he's been injured from day 1 and has never started a game, what's the point I say! Our two regular FB's PVA and Ward) are sub standard for this league. Ward is honest as the day is long but is prone to disastrous mistakes (think the home game against BHA), He's always booting the ball aimlessly upfield with no thought to actually passing to one of our own. PVA, well don't get me started, that rant is for another day. I also don't think Mitchell has been giving enough opportunity to showcase his abilities. I'm no RH fan but he has to work with what he's got and our recruitment in the last few seasons hasn't paid off . Eze does show promise, the only exception. Roy is however responsible for tactics and this has been our downfall in my opinion. No plan B is an honest assessment and the inability to change things up when the situation presents it self has cost us points IMHO. With talk of a clean out at the end of the season of "older" players likely to come to fruition the opportunity to acquire some decent young talent should be embraced. Our U/18's are top of the league, has any thought been given to nurturing this crop up through the ranks? Probably not.

Yesterday, like a few games this season is best that we forget as unfortunately we are what we are and that is a very aging and poor quality PL team. The problems have been festering over a number seasons now due to lack of any real recruitment or investment in the first team squad. As the chart above shows we are currently the only ever present PL side since 2018 with a negative spend on players (-£11.5 million). This is a senior management failure above Roy's level (either Parish or Freedman or both), they have mismanaged contracts and as a consequence we have something like 16 contracts ending on the 30th June 2021. They have also extended contracts of players where their current form does not justify (Benteke, Sakho) and then there have been contract extension for players that are more prone to injury (Wickham). Then there is the signing of Ferguson who on paper looked a good prospect but he is conspicuous by his absence, so as yet we do not know what if anything he can bring to the team. Whilst Roy has to be responsible for team selection, his hands are somewhat tied by the limitations of what he has to choose from and this in turn has a negative impact on team balance and how we play. The only problem I have with Roy at the moment is his refusal to play Mateta instead of Benteke. Mateta is a much younger player, hopefully with better pace and positional awareness but again until we seem him start more games we will never know. We will survive this season, even though it's unlikely we will get many more points from the remaining games. the end of season activity by Parish and Freedman will be pivotal in determining if we will remain in the PL at the end of the 2021/22 season, so finger crossed!

This means we're selling more players than we're buying, it'll flip drastically the other way this summer when a load leave on a free and we have to spend to replace them. We've got money, no doubt about that, you don't spend 20m on eze and potentially the same on mateta if you have nothing else in reserve as you'd never spend your full budget in case anything goes wrong.

We have City Utd Arsenal and Liverpool they will be four more hammerings where the towel will be thrown in at the start of the game. Our GD will be -30 at the end of the season and with a coach who is apoarently a master of defensive stability

So where is this money?

We have got one player on loan now pay later and no doubt the deal for Eze. We have a long proud history of spending not just up to our limits but well over.

Why have we got a negative spend? Because we have no money and no reserves and have to sell to balance the books.

I'm really not sure we have, the lost revenue from spectators will have a major impact on the finances of all clubs. The Americans have been actively trying to sell their own stake since 2019 as they want out so they are unlikely to want to invest more and clearly Parish seems not want to put anymore of his wealth in, so we are in a bit of delima in that we need new players in key positions but whilst there seems to be little interest from alternative investors cash may well be tight. This will mean if Roy does leave it will difficult to attract a new quality Manager as team investment will be an important part of his decision to come to this club as their own reputation will also be on the line!
