I've just read that Kevin De Bruyne negotiated his own new £20.8m contract with Man City. No agent involved, didn’t know that. Well done him.

Football agents have creamed off £272m commission over the past year apparently. They are a blight which needs better control. They've done much to push up prices which works against smaller clubs, like ours.

I remember Simon Jordan running his own, one man crusade trying not to pay agents. He made a point, but didn't really win.

Dad and I watched games standing on the muddy slope of the Holmesdale Road end. He cheered and I rattled.

FIFA tried to regulate the business and gave up.

There are dodgy agents but the worst stuff is unlicensed.

The reason FIFA gave up is that these people do not claim to be agents but advisors or intermediaries and so do not require a license.

Often these people are used by the player or club as a tax dodge e.g. advisor for the player is his father and his fee is actually a bung to the player.

The only way I can see how it can be regulated is that all monies are paid by the club direct to FIFA who can redistribute it to the buying club and all interested parties and advise the tax authorities.

This at least would provide transparency.

As to what the players earn I don't begrudge anyone for
maximising their worth.

You want all the money paid to FIFA. That well run, efficient, honest, scrupulously clean, moral organisation! Have you lost your senses man?

Yes, I recall the Tim Cahill business. I believe we were in with a good chance of getting him from Millwall, but his agent then demanded an arrangement fee of something like £125k. Jordan told him to take a jump and the player went to Everton. But I think he succeeded in keeping AJ's agent out of the negotiation that led to his staying with us for one more season.

Think Dougie did his own deals.

Presumably including the Bolton one

Well not FIFA exactly but a financial services company appointed by them but point taken.

I'm not sure I'd want to trust any firm appointed or recommended by FIFA, either.

Jordan admitted that not signing cahill probably relegated us that year.
Morals sometimes sit on the fence!
