TFF Sterling.

The thought of Southgate at Palace in July makes the threat of Lamps or, dare I say, Coops, almost palatable.

England love a Palace Manager 4 out of the last 12 England managers have also managed Palace plus Southgate being Palace born and bred. Southgates win record compares favourably with most predecessors and his record in competitive matches is excellent. So give it a rest.

In hindsight probably fairer to say the Palace love an England manager given all but El Tel managed the national team first

Isn’t it more true that Palace have sought out 4 failed England managers. I don’t remember any of them winning anything…ever.

All England managers have decent records because they play a load of crap teams in qualifying but then flop as usual when the real competition joins in.

Southgates win record in league football is just under 30% - that’s pretty poor. In contrast Big Sam’s is closer to 40% and Venables was closer to 44%.

He has the pick of the top English players as national team manager and plays a lot of teams we should comfortably beat in qualifying - so that lifts his win percentage as England’s Gaffer. However that he is national team manager, with that league percentage, is a travesty. I always though that particular job used to be awarded on merit to the best and most effectively proven candidate. Well that ain’t him.

There is no way he should be allowed anywhere near our club as manager if he leaves England as he is not, quite frankly, good enough.

Whether Southgate becomes a consideration now or at some time in the future I would like to make just 2 points -

a) The England job exposes the manager to some of the best facilities & support people / processes at national level - Globally

b) We are often on here complaining that our scouting network doesn't see the up & coming from other countries whilst they are still affordable, well the National team manager sees loads of other countries up & comings in these meaningless friendlies.

Just saying -

I'm not in favour of Southgate becoming Palace manager

But I do feel the need to correct people on here who are looking at Southgate's club record at face value only.

His win percentage was not great but he actually took over and managed a Boro side that were in an awful lot more trouble than people realised. When he was there Boro fans generally liked him but once he left Boro went into freefall the Boro fans then realised what an excellent job he'd been doing and bemoaned him leaving. (Trust me many were moaning daily to me about it!)

The problem is that it makes it more difficult for us to go back to the also rans as they now know that they weren't first choice

Absolutely that is quite possible. But our other targets may still see us as an upgrade on their current situation. NES quickly switched to Everton once that opportunity became apparent. Dyche has opted to stay put. I don’t know if Howe is a possibility after he jilted us before.

So that leaves Lampard, who is surely the next best but of limited experience if you ask me. Thing is, he seems vain enough to be bothered by being 2nd choice. Others seem to have more risks- ie. not been in the PL at all.

Ultimately it's about wanting the job.

If it's true that NES became our preferred option, how much difference should that make to any other potential candidates ?

As an example, the Spurs job. Conte appears to have been their NES equivalent and now Fonseca looks to be coming in with the full knowledge he wasn't Levy's first choice.

There's plenty of media speculation but no official word from either Palace or any of the names being linked, so the fact of the matter is we don't know what's going on behind the scenes.

I'm surprised by all the anti-Southgate sentiment on here. He was relatively green during his club management, so I'd afford him some slack there - everyone needs to learn their way around a new role.

And I'd say that his learnings and observations have helped him take the England team forward and assemble a very capable and together group of players. I'm impressed with the squad psychology and mindset that he's created, which had made us a strong and balanced team. It's been a long time since an England manager has been able to do that.

My advice to people losing their sh1t about our lack of manager would be to chill out and watch the Euros. The Palace manager will be appointed when they're appointed.

There's no chance of Southgate being our next manager anyway, he'll be taking England to the World Cup next year - and he's the right man to do that.

There's no point in you coming on here and talking sensibly.

Given the wages and kudos of a Prem job, you would have to have the most colossal ego to care a less if you were 9th choice!!
