We were the perfect opponents for them today. They could afford to rest players for their massive midweek game against a very passive team who would barely lay a glove on them. Easiest 3 points for them all season

1 win in 11 games now, and that was against Brighton we were more than slightly rode our luck

Perhaps you forgot West Brom at home!

In the last seven weeks we have played 4 games and got 1 point. Absolutely tedious.

Weird that Kelly still doesn't get a look in - never really let us down whenever he's played.

You presumably didn't see Kelly in the recent U23 game against Stoke. He was poor. Dann was in the same game and was the better of the two on that occasion IMO. Neither looked PL standard, though..

An ageing team with little investment versus a team built with hundreds of millions. We worked hard but today we just lost to the better team. I thought Ward was motm and Mitchell had a reasonable game, and Eze was more involved, although his set-pieces were not great. Zaha was really poor today though. Poor decisions, poor touch and couldn't beat his man. Had he been at his best there were a few times when he could have done more. Not sure if he was carrying a knock, or just off his game.

Both Ward and Mitchell were good today. I thought Mitchell just shaded Wardy for MOTM, but just my opinion.
I agree with all your other comments and would add:
1) Once again Wilf failed to show any quality against one of the top teams.
2) Our 2 DMs did a reasonable job with Jairo for once (in recent games) getting one or two good tackles and interceptions in.
3) Mateta looked lost in those last 25 mins
4) Townsend showed he was the better option to start over Ayew.
5) Overall a reasonable performance from the team against the best club team in the land (and possibly in Europe/the World). But when you can afford to fork out £40m plus on every player in your squad (Foden excepted) your B team should beat the likes of us. This was Citeh's 19th consecutive away win in all competitions.

No disgrace today (unlike at the Etihad)

Not many of the squad do - Championship material at best. We've gone full circle: Holloway's Championship team that Pulis did well with to Hodgson's jaded and ageing side.

Yep. Unlike at Leicester where I think Roy got his subs wrong, today it was all about whether we could stop them scoring. Once they did they had complete control, just as they did when they took the lead against PSG midweek. We now have four games where we can be more competitive and hopefully get some points.

Seen enough of Mateta now to understand why Benteke's being picked. Looks absolutely hopeless.

So why bring Mateta in?
Not the first suggestion that Parish and Freedman think one thing and Hodgson thinks another. The manager must be involved in transfer and loan policy if he picks the team.

So he has 20 minutes against the best team in the country, when we are already losing 2-0 and he is hopeless! Did you say this after Brighton game? He has hardly had any game time, give the bloke a chance before writing him off

Absolutely agree with this. Mateta is being treated the way Meyer was treated (and Reidewald until injuries forced Roy to pick him). He is being made marginal.

The manager has looked at Mateta and doesn't rate him above the other options, simple as that.

Why did the club sign him? Because they judged it a risk worth taking given price vs potential value vs need. Same as any signing, some come off and some don't.

The real issue here is the wider one of which Mateta is but one example - however underwhelming our usual players might be, replacing them is extremely difficult. There are very few players in the world who are guaranteed to be a noticeable upgrade on a mid table Premier league player and that we can afford. All this 'Get rid of the deadwood' is all very good, but we need to be able to replace them with something better. Otherwise, and this is the bit I feel people miss too easily, we will be a worse team.
