Totally nonsensical, other teams give you nothing. You seem to resent the fact, we have been mid table all season on merit.

We made a flying start to the 97/98 season. I guess we can put that year down as a success too?

It's not really a dead rubber. We can finish the season 12th - 17th. The team that finishes 12th gets about £10m more than the team that finishes 17th, money which helps enable next year to be different.

So what you are saying is we litreally handed Southampton 12 million last night and can do ourselves out of 8 ?

Very disappointing last night. I know nothing as such to play for but against Southampton with the fewest points gained this calendar year than the likes of Sheff Utd anD WBA expected alot more.
The centre backs need a change Kouyate needs a rest and Dann i am afraid past it, put Cahill, Tomkins even Kelly a go.
Would give Butland a run out and replace Riedeweld and Ayew with McCarthy and Schlupp.
Wasnt hopeful when saw the line up and Ings starting but getting another early goal should have set us up.
Very poor.

As soon as I saw our back four I thought, and was going to post, that Danny Ings must have thought Christmas had come early. Then I thought: 'Don't be so negative...you never know.'
But of course you do. Are we better than Brighton? Burnley? Newcastle? Southampton? For some, all that seems to matter is that there are three teams in the division who are inferior to us.
The preference for Ayew over Townsend is to me completely baffling.
More positive: another goal for Benteke who seems now to be playing for another contract and Wilf looked a bit happier. But our defence this season! Two goals a game conceded on average. What happened to our 'hard to break down' reputation?
Perhaps last night showed that there is only one way we can play, and when we try to be more adventurous (4-3-3)we just don't have the players to deliver.

Responding to each in turn:
1) It may simply be a case of recovery time needed by Townsend after the weekend game and that Hodgson wants Andros for the Villa game.
2) The short answer re our defence is the ones who provided the glue have been injured and are getting long in the tooth (Cahill is 35).
3) We already discovered that against Liverpool and when we tried to get at Spurs after half time in the away game.

We have to accept that with the current squad our options are very limited. Hodgson has shown in his previous clubs that he can set up his teams in a more attacking way but he needs the right resources to do that and we currently don't have them, essentially because our defence is too old and slow and our midfield is weak.

Very good. That made me chuckle.

As much as I agree with your last paragraph it still amazes me that he tries to fit Eze into the midfield along with Ayew? Yes, there are injuries but McCarthy is on the bench? This now leaves such a hole in the middle of the midfield with two slow midfielders within it. It’s obvious that the spine of the team (midfield and central defenders ) are the weak links. Since Eze came in we have dropped the 3 central midfielders to two and have been overrun in most matches because of that. Last night a not that great Southampton team were made to look a top 6 side because we left so many gaps in the middle of the pitch for them to pass to unmarked players. Hodgson has set his formation out this season to attack more and it backfires because we don’t have the right (younger) players to cope. With an aging back four as well, they sit to deep which also leaves massive gaps. It’s not rocket science but Hodgson has now set his stall and won’t change back. I’m sure it’s mainly down to fitting Zaha and Eze in. It just doesn’t work. Somehow we have got the points to stay up but I don’t now see another side other than Sheffield United that are worse than us?

The 'level of hysteria' is a build up of frustration. A combination of poor tactics, selection, boring football and total lack of effort from the team several times this season and loads..........

There are plenty of other things to say but it's probably getting rather long now.

I suppose it comes down to temperament AS.

There is no dispute with what you say about how we play, the tactics, the management and the players. Thing is everything you say has all been said ad nauseum and we are now at the fag end of the season.

There are just 3 games left to play and one way or another we will see change next season, maybe change that we don't like at all. But change there will be.

Being somewhat long in the tooth, what we saw last night, uncomfortable though it was, tended to wash over me. I could not summon the strength to build up the level of angst that was exercised by some and that needed becky to intervene to calm things down.

Don't get me wrong. I do care. I get very down in the mouth when we lose. I have done on and off for over 60 bloody years.

Dad and I watched games standing on the muddy slope of the Holmesdale Road end. He cheered and I rattled.

I would ask the question then: why not care? And I would ask why do some care so much?
The hard answer is we're not happy with what we're seeing. There's literally no ambition at all.

We lost that game because we were bullied in midfield. We needed a hard man in there to compete. The ref let them away with it and gave them license to get stuck in. Ward-Prowse is a niggly little sh*t who kicks and pushes and winds players up. He gets away with it because the big boys in the team protect him when players react like Kouyate did.

He needed put in his place first 5 minutes. Failing that I think Kouyate should have flattened him in the last five minutes. It would have been worth a red card.

So Clinton knows Roy is leaving and we’re bringing in kids. I guess that means Frankie boy is the next manager.

where's Claude Davis when you need him

1) Disagree Roy will happily play other players for many game without rests he doesn't really like Townsend you can see this he is very quick to pull him off and drop him.

2) Injuries do not help but we have options and he refuses to use them how many CB do we have many yet he still keeps playing Kouyate when many of them are available.

3) Not really fair to select Spurs and Liverpool these are top teams also we showed in past we can attack but Roy has crippled this team we don't even do direct counter attacks he is stuck in his ways and drilled into the players keep the ball no matter what.

The squad we have now is the best one we have ever had take a look back and see with far less quality we was playing better football and even using players strengths also every game it's Roys favorites (At this stage he could mix it up but still no same old which is not because of the players that is an excuse)
