The squad we have now is the best one we have ever had take a look back and see with far less quality we was playing better football and even using players strengths also every game it's Roys favorites (At this stage he could mix it up but still no same old which is not because of the players that is an excuse) We don't know what injuries/knocks players are carrying, how players recover after games or the game plans Hodgson starts with. Whist we all have our idea of the best team on paper, that team isn't normally complete and able to play at it's best on the day. Kouyate has been our best central defender this season (bar half a dozen man of the match displays from Cahill) and plays centre half for his country. Our possession stats have been poor so no way are the team 'drilled to keep the ball no matter what'. That, or this skill level you refer to isn't actually there. This is not the best squad we have had. Quality only goes so far. The age of many of our previously pivotal players is against them. We are slower and have far less energy than squads in earlier seasons. We have been found out far more often this year due to the above.

As for the squad being the best we have ever had, if you turn the clock back 5 years i would agree with you but a lot of our players who have been very good in the past are now past their sell by date and i include Wilf in that

Kouyate has not been best defender at all do you even watch the games I don't think you do and he is not a CB doesn't matter if he has featured their for his country or pub team we have proper players that play that role and they dont even get given a chance. Stats are useless and again shows you are clearly not even watching the games we play to try and keep the ball this is why we constantly keep sending the ball backwards to try keep possession we don't do it well means nothing this is how Roy wants us to play. Yes it is the best squad show a season with none of those names which is a better squad you cant it has nothing to do with people not at peak etc. You really have no idea this is how Roy has set them up to keep the ball even if that means its at the back and the slow pace again is down to him yes those players you could say are not the quickest but we had more creative quick players he had no interest in playing them or drops them into the same system. Energy levels are set by managers you train for the style of play if a player cant cut it you dont play them and replace them so more lack of knowledge (Pep did this at City so did Klopp at Liverpool)

And re energy levels, you may have noticed that City and Liverpools' squads are both considerably bigger than our ageing squad

Being able to play Kouyate at CB this season has been a massive blessing. The injuries that we have carried all season in defence has been shocking and I think it gets forgotten too easily by fans. We have missed Cahill and Tomkins for major chunks of the season and then have had injuries all across the back and had to persevere with Dann at times. This season is one for me that could have ended in disaster so right now I will happily look at the positives and accept the fact that we are staying up and hope we get some new players.

Agreed, although I have been surprised/disappointed that Kelly hasn’t had a look in. After Tuesday I can see no reason to offer Dann another contract

Dann is 100% done at his level, the last few times he has played he has struggled massively for pace and is always a couple yards off the speed of the game.

He is so slow now that teams know if you get him on a one-on-one he is screwed. Maybe if he used some Just For Men we might not view him as such a grandad though! I have never trusted Kelly in the middle as he always seemed to have a mistake in him. He used to be ok as a backup to Ward at right-back, but that's about it. Kouyate suffers from being a bit slow to react to situations sometimes, but he has done ok in most games. Overall though our patchwork defence has looked so vulnerable due to injuries and age/slowness and if we are to compete again next season it needs an overhaul.

It's very simple the rules are you can only register so many so it's the same for every one Palace used up all their allocation so no they do not have a smaller squad compared to those others you mention.
