My concern is around timings.

If we assume Roy goes, when does his contract run out? If it is the same time as the players they all leave together. So any new man does not get a chance to look at expiring contracts and who they want to keep.

I think this is important. Any new manager has to have some say over the massive overhaul we are looking at. It seems to me that that has been missing under Roy as we have seen what looks like signing players Roy doesn't rate as he doesn't play them.

As Roy indicated on Sky this week, we will be losing some players who have been here a long time. Make of that what you will.

Benteke 11 goals in three seasons 6 this season just in time for his contract to expire Absolutely mad to offer him a new deal !

Scott Dann too slow off
PVA too greedy off
Hennessey off
Sakho off always injured both physically and mentally
Cahill off too injury prone
Macarthy off too greedy
James Macarthur Really really sad but suspect his back injury means he will have to retire

that would in theory save circa £37.5 mln a year from the wage budget

That gets you 6 players on wages of £125/- a week on free transfers or loans

Even if Benteke doesn't score another goal this season, you'd have to budget £15m to replace what has this year been an 8 goal striker.

We can't afford to throw an additional £15m at a striker with the complete overhaul our defence and CM needs. Benteke will be offered a new deal, probably lower terms, but I cannot see us releasing him at the expense of sorting out the centre halfs.

Actually it's 8 this season with 5 of them in the last 11 games. It's 7 goals in 19 starts (for the famous Brighton goal, of course, he came off the bench). His return is becoming acceptable if he keeps it up.

Not at all 'mad' to offer him a new contract given we probably don't have the money to replace him and our brightest young striker (Omilabu) needs at least another season in the Academy/development squad before he's might be ready to step up (emphasis on 'might').

Let go:

Hennessy
Henderson
Sakho
Wickham
PVA
MacCarthy
Dann
Kelly (poss extend depending on CB recruitment but actually think we're more likely to extend Dann)

Extend (in view of them only providing cover and being good characters in squad):

Cahill
Ward
MacArthur
Clyne

Extend only on reduced wages:
Benteke
Townsend

Some might say let them all go but I think that is unrealistic as we'll never do enough business to fill the gaps.

Keeping good pros and characters I have no problem with as they won't disrupt the team when not in the side but can be trusted with the odd match here and there (but should absolutely not be seen as starters otherwise we have no hope next season).

If the above is done then absolute musts for me in the transfer market is a CB, winger and box to box midfielder all of whom are ready to start/compete. We then of course have the fullback position to assess (a lot of hope currently being invested in Fergusson but this is obviously a massive risk). We'll then need to rely on finding some bargains to pad out the squad and can also pray that some youth players make huge strides and help fill gaps in certain positions.

Considering the the role of manager is also up in the air this is a truly monumental task that those in charge are going to have to face. Plus there's the Covid situation, tight funds, and the Euro's in offseason it's going to be a tricky time (but we won't be alone in that).

I'm excited to see how it pans out in probably a more masochistic kind of way. One thing is for sure...a lot is going to have to happen pretty soon if we're going to keep ourselves in the Premier League.

Great post Samprior, agree with most of it. Thought id post up the current 1st team squad . . .

[Link]

4 goalkeepers? we only need 3 for the 25 man squad, we can let 2 go(the 2 H's) Olly Webber can be intergrated from the U23's as 3rd choice & can still play for another season there.

Completely forgot that Jach is out on loan, as is Woods & Perrick. Agree with Doombear bout the U18's progressing into the 1st team too quickly, although, at current rate, Hannam, Rak-Sakyi & Omilabu wont be far off.

Some on here say play the kids or buy kids from lower leagues, others say, we'll be relegated if we do, fair point. Others on here say keep playing the oldens & tweak tactics, keep Roy, some say if we do, we'll be relegated, again, fair point.

So, what is the solution? Whatever transpires, i like most cant stomach another season of turgid negative Royball.

I'd extend Kelly as cover and Henderson, otherwise agree. Extending Henderson means Webber can do a year on loan somewhere which is likely better for his progression. It also means you don't have a massive panic if Guaita gets long term injured at some point.

That'd leave:

Guaita
Butland
Henderson

Ferguson
Ward
Clyne

Cahill
Tomkins
Kouyate
Kelly

Mitchell
Hannam

Luka
McArthur
Jairo
Schlupp

Eze
Townsend
Zaha

Ayew
Benteke
Mateta

I think that leaves us needing:

CB x2 (Andersen?)
LB x1
CM X1 (Gallacher?)
Winger X1 (Probably a loan)

I wouldn't be surprised if they extended PVA to knock out the need for the LB and spend the money elsewhere.

Anyone who's any good will be offered a contract by another club so it'll be a matter of retaining them on competitive terms.

Some of our older players need to step down a division (or two) and we definitely need some new blood.

Chelsea may do a deal to take players off their own wage bill (especially if Lampard comes to us) but they'll never be cheap. It's always better for us to recruit from the lower divisions and hope we strike lucky.

There's a handful of players who are obvious candidates for an exit but I wonder if we really are going to see a massive cull of players? It might be more about brinkmanship and negotiating wages down?

Agree Henry. How many clubs are going to offer these ageing players a better deal? We are already paying them over the odds compared to other teams of our stature in the PL.
