I did post something about this issue recently - even before we were mathematically safe it was difficult to believe that the players who are out of contract could perform as if unaffected by their personal position.

Most of the out of contract players will be looking to sign the last decent contract of their careers when they leave us. Would you go into a 50/50 challenge or risk injury in pursuit of points that your current club (who don't want you any more) don't even need? It might seriously hamper your career, earnings and opportunities.

I've no problem with players not being focused on playing for us if we don't want them any more. We'd all be the same at work. You'd probably do the job you are paid for, but not find that extra personal commitment that in fact wins football matches. Probably fair enough too.

My only objection is that one or two of them have played like they don't care for a while, including when we still needed points to stay up. I'm thinking especially of Van Aanholt.

Who's unsettled? Nobody players just hanging around waiting for another contract, either with Palace or elsewhere!
No need tear around the park wearing yourself out or tackling anything that moves, might get injured!

Out of the Palace team that played last night you would be hard pressed to guess who is contracted long term and who is going to be out of contract shortly.

We can just breathe a sigh of relief that we are mathematically safe for another season as I am sure most of the players wouldn't actually care!

It's not Roy's fault the club are in this current situation either.

These last three games are just going to be our squad players going through the motions, they won't put themselves out or strain anything, no need to. Their all waiting for a break a holiday and a new contract somewhere!

It's based on an extensive interview Hodgson gave after last night's match - it's quoted (apparently verbatim) on Football London. See today's article by Joe Doyle entitled "Every word Roy Hodgson said on Wilfried Zaha, Christian Benteke and Luka Milivojevic'a penalty".

I'm a subby, so if I do a sub par job I'll get docked for it,shame this lot aren't paid on performance based

But they haven't done a sub-par job. We are safe from relegation, have been all year, and that's what was asked of them.

On the reverse side if I were an out of contract player I would be looking to put in some performances to get a new contract or attract interest from other clubs. But perhaps that’s what’s wrong with the game these days.

Benteke seems to have taken your advice.

Yes. Unless I've missed something and we've spent loads of money on really good players.

PVA - he definitely wants out when his contract expires
Bats - will be p*ssed off with the amount of game time he has this season
Kelly - Gods knows what has happened here ?
McCarthy - won't want to injure his "glass" legs before a free to Celtic
Townsend - More interested in his media presence these days
Mateta - probably thinking - what the hell have I done in leaving Mainz.

Butland, Schlupp and Cahill are probably ok.

He probably earns less in a year from his media activities than he does in a week playing football so I doubt whether that's true
