I think the suggestion that Butland should immediately take over as No.1 keeper is a little premature. My main concern with him is that he looks less comfortable with the ball at his feet than Vicente. Millwall was just an extreme example of this. Playing it out seems to be a central part of Vieira's chosen style (personally, it gives me the heebie geebies every time) and so this is an important consideration. Personally I think we are very lucky to have Jack as our No.2 keeper and he may step up one day (he is 6 or 7 years younger), just not yet.

Incidentally, I don't think playing Jack at Brighton was a master stroke by Vieira, my impression, which could be wrong, is that Vicente hadn't fully trained due to an injury / recovering from Covid.

He just needs game time which hopefully he's going to be getting more of now, McCarthy wasn't given game time with us when we played Hennessey and that was a lovely cock-up at the time ..I blame a certain home game against Liverpool for his demise then, we are fortunate at the moment though for having two excellent keepers.

VG hurt his finger from a close range shot recently. I presumed he was recovering from that. I suspected he could play if absolutely necessary, but best to not chance it and use Butland. That was just my reading of the situation.
I think they are very contrasting keepers and each has his strengths and weaknesses. Generally, I think VG has better reflexes, and better footballing skills, Butland is better at dealing with the high ball. Obviously, there's more to it but they're both decent keepers.
