Not too many years ago whilst on holiday, I crossed paths with a gentleman who was an avid devotee of 'Eurovision' and claimed that he had attended many shows 'Live' and never fails to watch the programme.

I informed him in no uncertain terms what I thought of it and he recoiled as if he had found a 3 week old kipper at the back of his fridge, his face dropping as if it had been sucked down a plughole.
He tried to explain what he saw as the positives but I totally disagreed in vehement fashion and explained that I would rather have a tooth extracted without an injection than watch that hogwash.

He stormed off in a huff, muttering words under his breath which I assume were not complimentary about me.I suspect he yearned to clang me over the head with a copper bedpan.

He was either gay or foreign or both. If you are unlucky enough to listen to what passes as pop music over there you will know they work to a very low bar.

He's not the only one.

I know, I was less subtle about it earlier on here, but she looked like Ariane Grande's little sister.

Two words sum up why we as a country have failed consistently, cowell and simon.

Why thank you minion.

Well, we watch it whilst WhatsApping with a German family. That went well this year.

I read this

The Eurovision Song Contest is owned and organised by the European Broadcasting Union (EBU). The EBU includes national broadcasters from across Europe and beyond. Thatís why Israel and Australia participate, because they are in the EBU.

As with the other national broadcasters, the BBC pays to the EBU a participation fee. Along with four countries - France, Italy, Spain and Germany - the size of the BBCís participation fee allows the UK to automatically take part in the Saturday night grand final. Most countries must qualify from the semi finals held on the Tuesday and Thursday beforehand.

The BBCís participation fee is over £300,000. And this secures broadcasting of the two semis and the grand final. Thatís nearly eight hours of live television. Cheaper than commissioning and broadcasting new home produced television for a Saturday night.

If the UK were to win, then the BBC would have the option to host the following year. The cost of hosting falls mainly to the host broadcaster. The Swedish Television spent £16 million on hosting the 2016 Stockholm contest. While Russian television spent over £25 million on hosting the 2009 contest in Moscow.

The BBC would be unlikely to want to spend over £15 million of licence payersí money on an event with European sentiment. So itís better for the BBC to make less effort and avoid the costs of winning. And it shows in the UKís recent entries.

If you look carefully both hands were a fair distance away from his face. Looked more like a kind of celebration caught at the wrong time by the camera. He's thankfully been cleared of drug use [Link]
