Do you genuinely believe that a significant number of immigrants - some of whom risk hardship and possibly death to get here - do so to sponge off the welfare state? If you are talking non EU, would they not be better off going to e.g. Scandinavia if that really was their purpose. And given I thought we were discussing EU citizens, do they not come from a country with their own welfare net. As such, what possible advantage could they secure coming from the land and society they know only to claim benefit?

These are lesser attractions for young eastern Europeans, however the safety net is far better than their own once they qualify....they can also send money home....money gone out of the country that a native worker would spend here. Next door to me is a Lithuanian family. He works and has raised his children here, he knows that the welfare system here will provide whereas at home it's far harder, especially when he gets older.
