Petrol changing from E5 to E10

During summer 2021, the standard (95 octane) petrol grade in Great Britain will become E10. You will still be able to buy E5 petrol but it will be the more expensive Supreme/Super type. The change is under the banner of being more Eco friendly? Or is it just an additional tax on older car owners who are probably the less well off in society and forcing older cars off the roads. Yep, good to highlight this fuzzy. I actually picked up on the news from a motoring magazine a while back. I don't believe there's anything sinister going on, it's just that someone somewhere decided it would be better to give fuel a descriptive tag rather than using the octane rating. Dad and I watched games standing on the muddy slope of the Holmesdale Road end. He cheered and I rattled.

Yep, good to highlight this fuzzy. I actually picked up on the news from a motoring magazine a while back.

I don't believe there's anything sinister going on, it's just that someone somewhere decided it would be better to give fuel a descriptive tag rather than using the octane rating.

So eco-friendly it drops your fuel economy by around 10%. Slow clap UKgov, slow clap.

I only ever use Tesco Momentum 99 or Shell V-Power though, so this hopefully won't affect me, until they taint the premium fuels (only a matter of time).

Esso Synergy Supreme is E0 in the South of England but not all Esso stations sell it. Any amount of ethanol is horrendous for classic cars, it dissolves rubber seals and separates in the tank after a couple of months into petrol and a very acidic water which will cause all sorts of problems. Tesco Momentum is supposed to be the same as the Esso Supreme but I'm not convinced. Shell V Power has a small amount of ethanol, but I use it if I can't find the Esso. So, if you have a classic tucked away in your garage then I would recommend only using Esso Synergy Supreme, but most classic owners will already know this. I'm guessing it will also help cars built in the 90's and early 2000's but the penalty you pay is greater expense.
