Vauxhall owner stellantis has said it will invest more than £26 billion in electric vehicles between now and the end of the year.It aims to make the cost of owning an electric vehicle equal to that of a petrol -driven model by 2026! Absolutely fantastic news - the cost of an electric will be coming down! Stellantis said it would build at least 5 plants in Europe and the US to support its strategy, two in France and Germany, and a third in Termoli in Italy.

Not exactly philanthropy for the planet is it. They're in it to make a profit and they will. They spent years throwing s*** in the air without giving a toss!

And for Britain too, as Ellesmere Point is also going electric, safeguarding jobs.

What with clean energy, I’d say a win for everyone

Everyone conveniently forgets the "green" cost of making the batteries - isn't making one battery the equivalent damage that running a deisel car for 5 years does?
Also creating the electricity required to run these cars.
The emissions are enormous.
The car industry and governments around the world are conning us the same way they did with diesel engines.
They build cars so well now that they last a long time so they now need zillions of us to HAVE to buy new cars.
A massive con and massive damage to the planet.

Not forgetting the problems of all those people who don't have a front drive to park their car whilst they charge it!

Instead of ranting, perhaps tell us what you would do if you were in government. Ban everyone from having a car, perhaps? Ban people from reproducing, maybe?

Electric cars may not be perfect but don't forget they will also reduce air pollution which is a problem in the cities. I expect over time technology will find a solution to the more anti greens bits. They are already looking for an alternative to a lithium battery.

Maybe the Hydrogen car is the answer I don't know but anything that gets petrol and diesel off the road and reduces our dependency on oil sounds good to me.

What a disaster diesel turned out to be.

So I am suspicious of electric cars and battery production, unless it is actually 100% green which I very much doubt.

Hydrogen I can see that as the solution as does the CEO of Toshiba.

I don't know of any downsides to hydrogen.

Except one, it is hugely expensive to set up and run.

But once set up that seems to be it.

The cavalry charge towards having everything powered by electricity is mind bending. Not just for vehicles. The government want us to do away with our gas boilers too.

As The Dolphin says above, where is all the power coming from? Certainly not here. Our existing power stations can't provide enough of the stuff. Remember the issue in the Channel Islands recently when France threatened to cut off their power supply in the dispute over fishing rights.

Wind farms are spreading like a disease and are a blot on the countryside, not to mention the seaside. Nuclear is the only way to go, but the cost and risks are enormous.

On the subject of electric cars, an 84 year old chap has just converted his 1934 Austin 7 to run on lithium batteries, just to give himself something to do.

Dad and I watched games standing on the muddy slope of the Holmesdale Road end. He cheered and I rattled.

I get to drive Audi E-Trons and Volkswagen ID 3’s at work. The biggest thing I hate about electric cars are how quiet they are, you just can’t hear one coming, which to me is dangerous. With no engine tick over, you have to double take at the dash board to make sure they’re on or off. I walk away from them thinking have I turned it off?? But I guess it’s something as an owner you’d get used too.

The Audi’s can shift though, lovely to drive and they look incredible, but at £100.000 and I believe £7000 for new batteries in the future, I think I’ll give it a miss
