Did anyone else visit the Bier Keller, which was in a basement below Marks and Spencer, entrance on the high street?

Certainly did, and the one beside the furniture shop that is now The George

Got an air rifle and Sheath Knife there in my younger days, no ID required then and I was only 12 or 13

It was indeed the railway, and used to tilt when more people would congregate on one side!

Sticky wobbly flooring is all I remember about this dive, still drank there a fair bit though

I think the garden centre went years ago. Loved going there in the summer, water always freezing. Changing rooms were used for football in the winter

All boarded up now but the boars are still there. I did jump off the 1st board once and then quickly swam into a mob of swimmers in the shallow end to stop getting kicked out. Mind you, as someone stated earlier, you wouldn't want to stay in the deep end for long as it was always bloody freezing

Showing my age now

It was almost beside the red deer in South Croydon, between that and the old Jaguar dealer that moved further up the road opposite Whitgift School if I remember rightly

kennards, grants & Allders.
propr old school dept stores.
Allders met a sad end but was pretty decent in the 70s.
my brother worked in the white goods / electricals dept.
On a friday night they had a staff disco & sometimes cabaret night (bob monkhouse performed there-very blue!)
what a daft idea having a staff pish up the night before your big trading day, saturday.

Didn't Kennards become Allders? Debenhams was always opposite and was improved when they built it into Centrale.

C & A used to be where Next is now and Primark was originally Littlewoods.

the forum boozer, whitgift centre pre-covered.

Often drank upstairs there as there was always rumbling and breaking glass noises coming from downstairs.

Gotta be a MKII escort Mexico.

It's the very same shape as my first car which was a MKII escort 1.3 GL, which I had fogs put on to emulate a Mexico but stalled at the aerofoil on the boot

The good old VD bar, 50p admission on a week day afternoon. We used to go there every Wednesday lunchtime on our break from our engineering course in Croydon college to 'play the table video games' Of course the strippers used to distract us a little

What interests me about the wine list, it's how comprehensive and diverse it is, compared to today.
German wine = Leibfraumilch
Spanish wine = red
Portugeuse wine = rose
And a diverse French collection including, Chablis and Sauternes.
Gosh, we thought we were all so very posh and cosmopolitan back then

Oh come on Ali, what about the upmarket Neirsteiner :P

I got my first shot gun licence when I was 11 from my local post office. Cost 2/6d and I had to fill in my name and address. How times have changed.

Actually, might have been 5 bob.
