I was born on Christmas Day 1959 over a piano shop two doors down from the Orchid Ballroom in Purley. My Dad was bar manager there at the time and had to leave at 1 a.m Christmas Eve/Day to come home as I was arriving at 1.45 a.m.!

Some brilliant pictures here KD, really nostalgic.

My first ever gig I went to was Cockney Rebel at the Greyhound in their Judy Teen days (supported that night by Be Bop Deluxe). That poster shows how many good bands they put on there.

Talking of clubs in South Croydon, does anyone remember Under The Olive Tree. I remember going downstairs, very small, mostly Ska. Not very posh.

Dad and I watched games standing on the muddy slope of the Holmesdale Road end. He cheered and I rattled.

Where was the Railway Tavern did it become the Swan and Sugarloaf, The Greyhound once had ACDC, Bad Company and Status quo on the same bill, i think 1976, i was 11, too young, But i remember the Cinema in Crown hill with fondness

The Swan and Sugarloaf has always been there since horse and carts rattled past. The only Railway Tavern I know was in Carshalton. I went by it on my paper round.

railway hotel could be 2 places.
i think there was 1 in purley, otherwise it could be south norwood, which was then converted into the portmanor?
(just by the bridge)
i think its the later.
