what a great prediction.

Have to say MG looks quite a quiet player and i would have thought Andersen might be a more obvious choice as captain (a bit older, International experience, already captained in the Prem etc).

However, PV has seen something in Marc and he has excelled as captain - as has Jimmy Mac, when called upon.

I also think MG represents a lot of what Palace stand for - a young, immigrant Londoner and black player.

Is that what we stand for? I didn't realise it was our aim to target black immigrants. So, our manager is a French black guy and a fair few of our team fit your description, but I'm not sure Mr Parish would agree with it.

By my reckoning, Crystal Palace FC stands for a progressive, forward thinking, diverse, financially and physically healthy club. As a young, black, English player, Marc Guehi fits the bill.

Dad and I watched games standing on the muddy slope of the Holmesdale Road end. He cheered and I rattled.

He sounds like a Londoner to me. Interestingly we have always had a significant amount of black players (not that it matters). Steve Coppell's teams at the end of the 80s/early 90s were quite diverse - and that was without the huge foreign imports we have now.

Going back to the important point - yes MG is rather quiet verbally but he has an authoritative air about him. He is ideal captain material and I wouldn't be surprised if he was skippering the England team in years to come.

Just had a quick butchers in the 'Players' section on the home page & it states that although he has British Nationality he was actually born in Abidjar Ivory Coast, who knew.

Bear in mind also that Guehi was chosen to captain the England U17 team AND earlier this season the U21 team. He clearly has something that marks him out as captain material.

Also, on a different note, he's been chosen as the PL rookie of the year on the Athletic site. Well deserved for a youngster playing his first season in the PL. Let's face it, he looked at home in this league virtually from Day 1.

As much as I like Gallagher, I would rather have Guehi out of the two if we could only have one of them.

IMO centre backs are the two most important players in any side and for all the talk about Olise, Zaha etc Guehi is the player the so called big teams will be coveting the most.

Yes a bit of tautology from me. Sorry.
The Athletic reduced the list to 12 rookies and asked their subscribers to vote on them. Guehi got 25% of the vote ahead of Romero, Cucurella, Tomiyasu, Livramento and Dewsbury-Hall.

Jadon Sancho was well down the list!

Whooooo?

TBF he did help United limit Palace to only 1 goal at the end of the season, or did he? Missed the game lol

Now Zaha's got a bit of green grass ahead of him here... and finds Ambrose... not a bad effort!!!!

Didn't think my comment would get the BNP reaction it did.

Just pointing out he was born aboard and has settled in London as did Zaha and AWB is of DR Congo descent.

It appears many of the lads coming through our academy have a similar background.

Our brighest prospect is Rak-Sakyi who is from Ghana and previous players like Victor Moses is Nigerian and moved to South London at a young age.

I think it just shows how multi cultural South London is and how Palace has embraced this. I don't think it is a case of targeting immigrants but let's face it about 80% of our academy is made up of either 1st or 2nd general immigrants. I'm personally quite happy with this.

It stands for all of the above in my view. If you want to be pedantic, statistics state 31% of South Londoners are black and other minorities and the same percentage are immigrants so on that basis, you'd expect them to take up a third of our team. However, as a good proportion of the majority white population probably live in leafy suburbs that don't produce many footballers, in reality more than that. In short, a Palace team that has a good proportion of minorities/immigrants would reflect the community we represent though whether that should be a priority is another question.
