Yeah, I thought that strange, tho tbf, thought he linked up well with Wilf & the one-two for the goal was good. After seeing Mateta come on for the last 18mins, I can understand why he wasn't preferred, looked slow & very unfit, still, early days.

Mateta is recovering from Covid

It's exactly West Ham or Everton that I can see spending that amount on someone. Not us. I don't think it's a good price but I think he's a good player. However, I also thought Brewster was decent.

That news doesn’t come as a surprise . Saturdays game was the first real run out for all of those players , and although it was in the main entertaining enough, it was nothing more than a run out, for the experienced part of the squad, the young players were there to impress and would be disappointed if they felt they had not.
If Mateta, had been recently ill then eighteen minutes running around was probably the only point in the excise.
It was nice to see McArthur, looking Sharpe so early in the season, after his problems, and Wilf, was giving Viera, a, “ look what I can do “, session.

Indeed, both the good AND the bad all in 45 mins.

Agreed. But the good was still very good, a little wasteful , came off the ball a little easy a couple of times, but then why get an injury in that sort of game? Allowing for that still the stand out performer, and as he had every right to be as rusty as anyone else on view.. I was really surprised at how keen he appeared at this early stage.

I actually wasn't surprised. If Wilf stays with us, surely he'll want a central role in our attack and he's eager to make a good first impression on PV. If he's going to leave, he'll need to convince other PL teams that he's still full of energy and flair. Good to see, though.

It did look as if he was trying to impress , and maybe not just Viera. And potential employers.
I found it good to see, and I bet a few little boys that only ever see Walsall, in the flesh, were impressed as well.

Would taking up the Mateta option come from this or next years’ budget? Can’t remember how much it was - around £10/12m?

£17m

Blimey. Doesn’t that include the initial loan payment though?
