The Attorney General has issued a warning to social media platforms and their users over posts about a Premier League footballer who has been arrested on suspicion of child sex offences.

The player, who cannot be named for legal reasons, was arrested at his home last week and released on bail pending further investigations.

Britain's chief legal adviser has warned that such posts could be in contempt of court, a crime that carries a potential prison sentence, and his office reminded social media platforms that it is important they remove information that could prejudice court proceedings.

The Attorney General, Rt Hon Michael Ellis QC MP, said: "Everyone is innocent until proven guilty, and everyone deserves a fair trial.

"A mis-judged tweet or post could have grave repercussions and interfere with a trial. It could mean a trial is delayed or at worst stopped because a fair trial isn’t possible – so I would caution everyone, don’t get in the way of justice being done.

"The Attorney General’s Office will monitor the situation and we will review any contempt of court allegations made to us."

The incident comes one month after Mr Ellis QC launched a campaign called #ThinkBeforeYouPost in an effort to prevent high-profile trials from collapsing due to people misusing social media.

Trivial fact - Palace used to win 5-1 at least once a season, maybe next season?

I remember a time when we were linked with the player and many, myself included, wanted him to sign for us.

Might be able to get him on a free at this rate.

Stunning. Which makes you wonder (for the umpteenth time) what is the matter with their satisfaction expectancies?

The problem really stems from this ludicrous attempt to showcase top footballers as role models, which implies they lead (or should lead) morally untarnished lifestyles, which is both unfeasible and rather unfair.

Why not just look on them as rich, privileged people who happen to give the great unwashed some entertainment from time to time, but certainly aren't to be beatified for it.

Where did the information that the arrested individual was a footballer come from I wonder?
