Defence still looks weak and midfield needs someone. I feel we could hold our own with our current best line up. Probably avoid relegation, but any more than one injury and we'd be in big trouble. Especially a long term one or two.

The reality is that, unless more newcomers arrive, our starting line-up is unlikely to be much different from the one that ended the previous season. Slightly concerning unless PV can extract something extra from these payers.

Not that concerning. We had a decent 11 and when you replace Dan and Cahill with Tomkins and Guehi, it’s a big part of the problem solved.

I think a huge amount needs to be done in the next three weeks we look frighteningly short.

Half agree but Eze is a huuuuuuge miss.

He was central to pretty much everything that was positive about us going forward in the second half of the season.

Olise is an exciting prospect but I suspect he's a year or so behind Eze in general development and Eze himself took a while to bed in.

Tomkins is rarely fit for very long, so I'm not sure we can rely on him.

That's the issue isn't it? Our first XI isn't made weaker by all those players leaving, it's the squad depth that concerns.

Of most peoples best XI for the first game, several have had more than one medium term injury in recent seasons. Benteke, Schlupp, Tomkins, Clyne (STC) have all missed big old chunks of recent seasons, and even McArthur finally succumbed after what seemed like a thousand games. If even half of them get crocked before Eze, ferguson and Olise are ready we'll be in trouble.

There isn't a club our size that can count on two excellent players for each position of course, and naturally occurring vacancies can be a positive if a youngster steps up.

I'd reckon we'll get two or three more first team players in this window. We haven't even used our loans yet.

I'd start the season with:

-------------Guaita

Clyne--Andersen--Tomkins--Mitchell

----Kouyate--McArthur--Schlupp

------Olise--Benteke--Zaha

Of course, I am presuming that...

1. Clyne is signing (he must be, surely?).
2. Olise is over his injury, and fit enough having done no pre-season.
3. Benteke and Andersen can just be thrown straight in, having done no pre-season.

Otherwise, bring in Ward, Ayew on the right and I suppose Mateta up top, unconvincing as he has been. Either that or Ayew up top (which is better than Mateta) and the kid Rak-Sakyi on the wing (which is a gamble, but worth the risk perhaps).

If Andersen is OK to play then Guehi must respect the seniority of the new man and of Tomkins, but won't have to wait long for his chance as the former picks up so many knocks, and we didn't pay over £15m for the latter not to use him more often than not.

Finally, I'd use Jimmy Mac as the deep playmaker, not Riedewald. We could get great value from Mac in that role - he should have played there instead of Luka for the last two years anyway. It's his natural position, and establishing himself there will save his legs and extend both his career and the great value he has provided to us. Jairo will get plenty of chances as both Schlupp and Kouyate pick up knocks in midfield, and Mac is 50 years old, but the young Dutchman isn't better than either of them, just younger.

Once Eze is fit, he plays of course.
