Assuming we have Ward and Clyne signed, I don't think right-back is an issue. We need to make a decision on whether Ferguson will or won't return to full fitness before we invest further there. Furthermore, Mitchell is two-footed so he also gives us some cover at RB. For me, the most interesting short-term question is Hannam. Is he as good as the hype suggests he may be? Can he translate an impressive season in the age groups last season to being a PL performer this season? If he is the real deal, Mitchell at RB and Hannam at LB become an option.

We do need a CDM. That is a priority. As others have said, Luka lacks speed and MacArthur is ageing. Kouyate may well see more playing time in this role from now on. I expect both incomings and outgoings here over the remainder of this window and the next one.

CAM we may need one, but that sort of player is expensive and we have some young talent already in the house. I think we may well see someone like Scott Banks given an opportunity to win that shirt meaning we can keep our financial powder dry until January if he or someone else doesn't prove themselves. So yes, we need a CAM but we may not need to buy one. Time will tell. It's a priority, yes, but it may not need to be resolved in the transfer market.

We do need a striker, badly. Along with CDM, this is the key thing I think we need to acquire right now. We have some serious young talent for this role (Omilabu, Street, etc.) but realistically, it is not yet ready. Personally, I am not convinced by Mateta and while I'm happy we re-signed Benteke, there's not a lot behind him. Ayew is a great depth player and invaluable as a last 20 minutes holding on to a lead sort of player but he's not really a born goalscorer. One approach to a striker would be spunking big money on real competition for Benteke. Another would be to sign a proven, high potential, young-ish Championship/League One goalscorer at a more reasonable fee and hope to find a pound-shop Vardy.

All-in-all, we've solved our most pressing problems with Guehi, Olise, and Andersen. Two more would do for me; CDM and striker and then see where we are in January. Of those two positions, CDM is the more critical need because we now have goals in the team (with everyone fit) beyond striker (Olise, Zaha, Eze, etc.) but we don't have much at CDM at all.

Wow, so interesting go different people’s opinions can be. I think CDM is the position we need to worry about LEAST. In Luka, Kouyate, McArthur and Jairo we have four solid options there, for what will likely be one position.

The one absence I see in those 4 names is an almost complete lack of pace - Riedewald is young but speed isn't really one of his qualities.

If we're looking for someone to link defence and attack then the ability to get up the pitch (and back again) is a key quality.

Also if we are looking for an option to come off the bench then I'd suggest a player with different qualities is also a priority.

So I'm ready to re-interpret CDM as a midfielder!

With Townsend gone we now have no one on right.

Every other position has cover.

I think it’s fair to say Zaha, Ayew and Olise can all play on the right.

If we had retained Townsend and Bats this would be looking good imo.

It's a struggle to see where goals would come from.

Seriously? You’re concerned at how we are going to replace their combined 3 goals from last season? I bet the two new centre backs will manage that!

Not too sure I agree with Steeleye about Townsend or Bats either but I certainly agree about our need for another striker. Mateta and Ayew are clearly not the answer and we can’t just rely on Benteke to keep his form from last season, assuming he even fits in to the way Vieira wants to play.

I’d be very surprised if we don’t sign someone that can play across the front 3. It doesn’t need to be right or left just someone like Zaha who can potentially operate anywhere across the front.

A creator - Townsend.

A marksman - Bats.

To replace those positions in the PL will be a very costly exercise, if it can be done.

Its so easy to just get rid of people, there will have been mistakes.

A more balanced policy would have paid off better imo.

Seemed to me that under Roy Townsend wasn't encouraged to get up the pitch and put in crosses - or that was the increasing trend. I suspect he'll show quite nicely at Everton under a manager who uses him as a wing and not a wide midfielder.

His goals are part of the equation - an equal part is what he offers to the team as a whole - pace.

We cant afford to have expensive players that don’t offer that much to the team. As another poster stated 3 goals isn’t going to be missed.
Our achilles heel in the past has been hanging onto players too long, no room for sentiment.

Now that Andersen and Gallagher are wrapped up, get Lookman in from Germany and we will have a very exciting team for our 9th PL season in a row.
