Good point on the left footedness of Olise. I'm also less sure than most on here about his absolute readiness for PL footie as a starter. He is not just younger than Eze but also a year behind him in experience and Eze himself took a while to really bed in. Originally posted by Putitout
Some seem to to see Olise, as the answer for the RW, the kid can play virtually anywhere through mid field , and along either wing.

Three more minimum . right back, central defender, goal scorer. Wait what? We’ve just signed two quality CB. And left back more important than right back. Ward and Clyne are proven PL performers (albeit limited ones), while left back we have zero proven ones. Mitchell has looked okay at best. Agree one more striker to compete with CB could be good.

I am very happy to see these new faces come in, but remember all we are doing is replacing experienced PL campaigners with largely untested newbies. (Sakho, Cahill, Dann OUT - Guehi, Andersen IN) (Townsend OUT - Olise IN) (Eze OUT injured - Gallagher IN) We have not necessarily improved a squad that finished 14th last season and with the loss of PVA one could say we may be weaker all around. Yes, let's get excited about the new younger faces, but it is not automatic they will gel into a PL fighting force.

1. As for CBs, Sakho was absent for virtually the whole season, Dann was found wanting when he covered for the injured Tomkins and Cahill was slow and injury prone. Andersen's performances for Fulham last season were well ahead of those 3 (and is hardly untested). Guehi is untested in the PL but IMO is unlikely to be worse than Dann, slower than Cahill or as injury prone as Sakho. IMO we have a stronger more reliable central defence than last year especially with Tomkins back (he only had 7 starts last year). 2. Gallagher is hardly untested and his performances for Baggies were similar to Eze's performances for us during Eze's first half of the season. Eze only blossomed when he was given a more central role in the second half of the season and he should be back by New Year. 3. Olise, I grant remains an unknown force in the PL and I'm not sure he will be ready to go straight into the team when he's recovered from his injury, but then Ayew will cover that position initially, and currently without any proven back-up so we are weaker in that position. The youngsters, Rak-Sakyi and Banks look like being the back-up unless we buy a wide player and we do still have a month in which to do that. 4. Finally, much will depend on the extent to which the squad can adapt to the style of play Vieira has clearly stated he's wanting us to play. The players brought in are believed to be comfortable on-the-ball players, so that's a start. Where will we finish? Who Knows? Whilst I'm encouraged by what has been done so far, avoiding relegation remains the main thing and will be a challenge for us IMO. Edited by doombear (31 Jul 2021 9.01am)

Well said Doombear. I agree with your analysis, although I do think we should get a new RW to replace Townsend and see Rak-Sakyi develop for another 12 months with occasional appearances. I also wondered if Banks might be seen as a replacement/understudy for Gallagher. I still think we need another striker, as neither Ayew nor Mateta are offering much. As for our defence it is unquestionably better than last season with the only departure not addressed being that of PVA and he was better up top than as a defender, so no great loss. I still believe we might need a RB, if we think there's any danger that we won't have Ferguson for the season. So plenty still to do but for once there's time to do it and hopefully funds available.

That’s an excellent analysis. I particularly endorse the view that our fortunes are as likely to turn on PV’s abilities as a manager as they are on our activities in the transfer market.

I'm very much in the PV over transfer activity camp as to how well this goes down. What interests me is that we are building the team from the back at least insofar as money spent goes. This will likely be Dougie of course but PV's reputation and record is actually of a manager who has a decent defence and dries goals up going forward! I understand the optimism of having a new manager who is not committed to low block but passing the ball around doesn't always translate into more goals - just prettier football to watch. Yes agree, excellent analysis db. I do however share Sprites’ concern re Left Back and I haven’t seen enough from Mitchell yet to convince me he’s the answer to that position for us in the Premier League. He needed too much cover from other players last season and also got beaten by his man too often and too easily. Showing promise certainly and he may develop and improve but he’s not there yet IMHO and we need to strengthen LB more so than RB (Clyne, Ward & Ferguson). Now we just need to unearth an Ian Wright or Jamie Vardy from Non-League and we’re on fire!

Unless Palace sell Zaha for big money I can not see any further significant signings. We hopefully will have Eze and Nathan Ferguson available later in the year.

Edited by doombear (31 Jul 2021 9.01am) Your analysis appears to assume Tomkins will be available - a huge gamble. I will be delighted if Guehi proves to be anywhere near the quality of Scott Dann, who has in my opinion been the best centre half we have had at the club - albeit his last season was a bridge too far. As for Gallagher and Andersen, whilst I hope they are a success, it can't have escaped your notice that ultimately both were relegated. Whilst the players they are replacing finished 14th. So whilst you are correct they are not untested, the outcome was unavoidably relegation - in anybody's estimation that must be a failure.

As has been stated in a thread on the Transfer board, the following players were relegated from the top division: Edited by doombear (31 Jul 2021 12.51pm)

I think Left back is a problem and we are also weak at right back. I agree centre forward is also a potential problem. PVA gave us an attacking option and had real pace. He was part of the reason so many of out attacks were down the left hand side. If we lack pace in both our full back's this is going to restrict us going forward. Even if Mitchell improves ( which he should given his age and a full pre season ) we don't have cover.
