That's how I've seen him. If we can get him for under £10m then I hope we would. He's an upgrade on McCarthy IMO and would certainly strengthen the squad and at the moment we very much need that and in his position.

Sometimes we just have to accept reality which is that we don't have the kind of money that will enable us to fix all the positions which need fixing with the calibre of player we'd like. I believe Hughes can do a job for us.

Shaqiri would be affordable and do exactly what we need from midfield. Can't believe we haven't made an offer!? Perreira would be great, but too expensive. Shaqiri, at 29, offers us the stop gap we need until the youngsters progress. Hughes is nowhere near the level we need.

Shaqiri's wages would be an issue.

Not to mention the fact that while he has undoubted quality with the ball, when he hasn't got it he doesn't go chasing it.

Also I'd be surprised he'd want to sink to the likes of us. Surely, he's looking to move to a club involved with European competitions. It's his last chance to play at the top table.

I know some people won't like me saying it but at present Hughes is an achievable target, Shaqiri is unlikely to be.

We can do a lot better than this - move on.

Can we? Like who? Who better could we get for around £5-£7m?

Don't waste your time with jealousy. Sometimes your ahead, sometimes your behind, the race is long. But in the end it's only with yourself!!

Pereira has chased the easy money and gone to UAE I believe

Palace has put in low ball offers with a few players that are in last year of contract and then gone on to either get them free or pay a little more.

Will Hughes for 5m would be a bargain I expect the true figure would be 7m if we land him this window.

Some one saying go for Shaqiri they are crazy he is a completely different player (not in a bad way I do think he would be very good if we could get him but it's a fantasy also wouldn't be good business) who

Based on past dealings with Liverpool he would end up costing around 16m and has far better options then Palace also his current wages are rumored to be around 90,000 a week not including bonuses for a 29 yer old this is not the direct Palace are going towards.

Without even looking that much O Brien for a start.

Is he PL ready? Hughes is PL Proven. Also hasn’t O’Brien stated he wants to join Leeds?

I agree, £7m would be about right, no higher. Of course Watford may be reluctant to sell to a club who potentially could be relegation rivals.
Shaqiri would not only be too expensive but may well be disruptive influence. Luma would not be best pleased!

For me the question is whether Hughes is a better central midfield option than others in our current squad .
I would prefer him in central midfield to Schlupp (not a central midfielder) Jairo, the Luka of the last couple of seasons and arguably Kouyate (not the best passer).
Hughes has not so far fulfilled the potential he showed as a teenager when the big clubs were circling him, but he’s only in mid twenties , has a decent skill set in terms of passing and tackling.
He also is fairly mobile and I could see him working well with Gallagher and Mcarthur.
