Sorry Omph. Roy was safe with games to spare but still did not use any of the younger players to give them prem experience - wasted opportunity. Eze was a big buy so he had to play him.

Not fair on Roy that. He played Eze throughout despite the opposition and his not being a natural fit for the system. He schooled him through the season and he was noticeably more effective off the ball by season's end

He did us a big favour there as Eze success is likely a lure to other starlets - we're a club where you can get minutes. Compare and contrast Benrahma at West Ham - very few starts.

I agree. Roy was conservative and cautious regarding youngsters, but I don't think he was obstinate about it. Truth is, he had precious few with the quality that wouldn't be exposed in the Prem, so it was dangerous to put any newcomer anywhere but in the attacking third. And what were his options there?

I think his faith in Mitchell at LB was justified, but it was a risky move – and plenty of us opposed it.

Correct

Fair comment in a way about the end of the season but can only think of Rak Sakyi as one who might have come on. Am I missing anyone else? And might he actually be still in development and probably a little way off from first team appearances. Not seen him even mooted as a first team starting player on here. Could be different come January. Not sure a few minutes off the bench at the end of the season is that big a deal.

Not sure you're right on Eze actually. There were times mid season where he could have been "protected" when we were in damage limitation mode and in all honesty his early season performances were nothing too special.

Likewise he wasn't afraid to bench PvA for Mitchell. Big call that one.

Not arguing that he was especially progressive but it doesn't add up to say that he would play experience over youth come what may as the original post had it. I'm pretty certain he'd have played Gallagher and Guehi - we were after Gallagher last time too after all - he just had an old squad and that was as much Parish and Dougie as him.

Too much currency is placed on the selection of youth players. Mclaren signed off his Middlesbrough career by picking a home-grown XI for an away game at Fulham. It allowed him to play to the galery without addressing any of the long term duties of care and responsibility. Look up the XI that day and see how many made it. I'll give you a clue - same amount that would have made it without the manager using them to make himself look good. What a c***.

Hodgson looked at what we had, how he wanted to play, and picked the side most likely to get enough points overall. If you got in his side it was because you were the best option, not because of some bizarre positive discrimination in favour of youth, and you know what? It was an effective filter. Wan Bisakka got in, we made a f***ing tonne for him. Mitchell got in, did fine.

I've said it a million times but I'll repeat it - if anyone can find me the youth player we released that proved the management wrong then I'll accept the subsequent criticism of Hodgson. But nobody can.

Well Levi Lumeka is now a Ligue 1 player, playing 15 games in Troyes' promotion winning campaign last term (missed a huge chunk of the season through injury).

Good luck to him, but at the end of the day one lad has done OK in a standard comparable to the top of league one and the bottom of the championship, while we remain mid table in the richest, most competitive league in the world. Not exactly a terrible indictment on Hodgsons judgement.

What is the point on speculating what RH may or may not have done with players who were not in his squad.

The anti-Roy brigade wants an annual parade.

If our new signings don't look good against a poor Reading then we would really be in trouble.

Err…AWB was the only option as Ward was injured. He took his chance and couldn’t be dropped thereafter. Jairo played his socks off v Man City and was not seen again for over a year! Got a chance at left back, won player of the month and then was dropped again! There were plenty of games when us non-experts we’re disappointed to see the youth get zero minutes on the pitch. The end of the 19/20 season was particularly galling.

Much as I like Mark Bright, for these ears he's a tough listen on Palace TV.

He did make an interesting statement about young players during yesterday's game though. Along the lines of not selecting them for the senior team just for the sake of it, they have to be good enough.

And that's a point that too many on here don't seem able to understand.

I question whether it's harder for youngsters to break through these days owing to the way football is structured.

In days gone by, a promising young player would get selected for the reserves. Team mates and opposition would be composed mainly of experienced players. That young player would be exposed to something akin to the physicality of League football and the standard of play required.

I don't think that U.23 football provides that learning curve. For evidence I look at our and other club's U.23 performances against the likes of Bromley where at times it resembles Men v Boys.

From personal experience ( albeit many moons ago ), when I was 16 and playing at a decent standard, my biggest problem was coping physically - and the only way to learn was to keep playing through it.

Thoughts ?

Across the PL no one has a conveyor belt of young talent that makes it into the first team. Clubs can point to one or two but that applies to all of us so the issue is not that Palace or Brighton's academy is badly managed otherwise we would see evidence to the contrary from other clubs.

So I agree with your central point that U23 football is not good enough if it were lots of youngster would be making it into Pl first teams.

I don't know what the answer is but they have to improve reserve team football.
