What always puzzles me in these situations is, player earns £60k a week, club offers new contract of £30k a week, player says no, leaves now gets zero per week.

I realise it’s probably not as simple as that, other issues could be involved. They maybe lucky to get a club willing to pay a 35 year old close to £60k a week. But still baffling to me.

It boils down to ego, players feel insulted by a pay cut. Zaha will have to take a large cut if he wants to go to a big club with a big bench,he will hardly play.

It is possible that the offer was not the major issue.
He might have concluded that his appearances might be limited so would rather go to a club where he was likely to be first choice, perhaps in the lower divisions.

In Cahill's case it maybe playing time is what he wants? If all are fit he would not be first choice so perhaps we are all being too hard on the guy maybe he just wants to play and will take a smaller deal, time will tell.

Last season I commented that two young centre halves should be made as priority signings, and I am happy to see that this has come to pass. The rigours of Premier League football have clearly caught up with Cahill, and his departure comes as no surprise. For those suggesting a player's ego might get in the way of signing a new contract on reduced wages, I'd say look at it from the club's point of view: offering top whack to any player who is unfit for half the season is not good economy. Time to move on, and thank you Gary for your services and your time at the club.

Cahill supported Sheff Wed as a boy.
Darren Moore is in a rebuilding phase at the club and maybe he wants him at the club.

Cahill played over a 100 games for Bolton who have just been promoted to League One.Perhaps Ian Evatt, a former central defender sees him as an asset at the 'Trotters'.
Just speculation!

The guys a multimillionaire and 35/36.

There's a lot more he can do with his life than play football.

Great player, unfortunately a full season is probably too much for him. You could have him as a back up in case other players get injured. Unfortunately, there's no guarantee he will be fit when others are injured.

I really liked the way he handled interviews. Surely he is showing promising signs of being a good coach if that's a path he wants to follow.

Three centre backs have left in Cahill, Dann and Sakho. It's quite a damage prone position.

I didn't even know Dann had left. Where's he gone? According to Wikipedia, which is normally reasonably up to date, he's still with us.

Thanks Gary. We have found someone else who can do something more than put his foot on the ball and roll it sideways for less than £60k a week.

Hope Rangers come in for you, with a great deal, although the Scottish Premiership is pretty much over for the season. Celtic lost their opening game last night and will now never catch the points back. Out of the Chamions League before the end of July, and will likely be out of the Eurpopa League halfway through August.

If they ever joined the Engkish league I would start them in the conference. I would expect Bromley to turn them over at the moment.

One of our problems with Cahill and Dann was that we played far to deep with them in the team due to their lack of pace. Hopefully with younger CB’s we will play further up the field which will support our forward play and they will get back quicker when needed? Great servants Cahill and especially Dann but we need this change. Not sure Hodgson would have let them go? Would have liked one of them to have stayed as a back up but not sure they wanted that or were willing to take a salary cut?

I think you're probably right ... an excellent professional getting on in years perhaps with an eye on the next step in his career. He may want to play every week or be more involved in coaching. Good luck Gary wherever you go and whatever you do.
