I wouldn't want to see Sol Campbell at Palace as I suspect he would cause friction because things weren't being done the way he wanted them.

I reckon Sol is probably a bit of an arse but doesn’t that often go with the territory? Takes an ego to think you can manage. And a lot more. People to believe in you and decide you’re worth taking a punt on. Easy to make the case someone isn’t worth it on an individual level.

The question racism in football is worth reflecting on in the context of your point- if 40% of players are black why so little representation in management and coaching?

Did anyone notice how keen Twitter were to tell that most of the racist tweets during the Euros came from England?
It's almost like they want to perpetuate an agenda or something.


The Police person leading the investigation, has said of the nearly 700 tweets/msgs etc, over 500 came from Asia & most of those where what they call 'bots'.

27 ip addresses were identified in the UK, 11 people arrested, 2 where white. This has been reported on BBC & various sites but not with shouty headlines.

Just for debate did Rooney get the job at Derby based on merit? What coaching experience did he have?
How can a manager get experience if they are not given a chance e.g. Steve Coppell when he became Palace manager in 1984 at the age of 28.

At my local low level non league footie club a few years ago Shaun Goater turned up to help with the coaching. I asked him why? He stated he had all the coaching badges but wasn't even getting interviews. When feedback was requested he was told he didn't have enough coaching hours. He said "at least they won't be able to use that as an excuse going forward".

So there may be an issue at the bottom level giving managers that first opportunity. If you don't get that initial opportunity how will you ever get experience?

Players who were successful at Big Clubs get opportunities over others, e.g., Dalglish’s first job at Liverpool or John Barnes at Celtic.

Rooney was a player at Derby , then a player/coach, joint interim manager and then manager. I accept all this happened fairly quickly about a year. Howver Derby had achance to assess him in all those roles before appointing him.

Steve Coppell was initially a very strange appointment but like a few other sucessful managers he retired early due to injury eg Clough and Howe. He was also a student of the game and even at that stage he impressed with his knowledge and nous. Would it happen now not so sure.

Shaun Goater is currently employed as a youth coach by Macclesfield where he was brought in by Sol Campbell

Goater is in the (sizable) majority in that he finished playing, did his badges, quite possibly had something to offer but couldn't get a job in football. Its massively oversubscribed.

When I did the coaching badges there were guys like Andy Sinton (England, QPR and Spurs winger for younger readers, very good player indeed) and Jason Dodd who played hundreds and hundreds of top flight games for Southampton, both of whom could only find coaching 'opportunities' in non league football (I put the word in inverted commas as I am familiar with the standard).

Quite why these guys and so many others didn't get the vital first chance to manage or coach when other guys with a similar background did is anyone's guess, and as you say, nobody has experience until they get a job, but you only have to look at the number of candidates to vacancies (especially given that the Premier league and championship recruit managers from abroad so much) to see that there will be far more unsuccessful and frustrated aspiring coaches than ones who get their chance.

Every year hundreds of guys retire from playing, and just have to join the back of a queue that gets added to by new members much faster than it moves. Like any profession, you can get qualified and have something to offer but that doesn't create a job for you.

One thing for sure, if you can get you first chance then you are far more likely to get other chances afterwards, especially at the level you have experience of. Allardyce, Pulis, Bruce, Hughes et al are obvious examples, as are Chris Houghton, Chris Powell, Leroy Rosenior etc. Campbell got back into football with Southend quite quickly after leaving Macclesfield. Even our own Vieira is on his third job already. It's getting the first job that opens it all up.

It is a difficult and tricky debate to be had around Sulzeer Campbell.

I gather he isn’t particularly well liked within the football fraternity and this also seems to be mirrored by a section of fans who follow football.

He will cite that it is harder for him to be shortlisted for potential posts if he has been applying over a period of time without much joy.

Ignorance or / and prejudice is part of the subconscious of many and Sulzeer being an outspoken, not charismatic and what seems to be deemed possessing an awkward personality adds to his limited chances of progressing as he so desires.

Personally, I feel he needs to offer his services doing some sort of consultancy to clubs especially defensively and develop a reputation and list of contacts through positive relations with clubs then after a period of time apply for managerial positions after demonstrating and evidencing that what he says holds weight whilst making a difference
