I don't think Reality is susceptible to perception. I mean a thing either is or it isn't. It doesn't depend on what one thinks it is.
We were easily beaten by the European Champions. playing Ward, McArthur and Ayew against Chelsea or any of the other top six clubs is a waste of time. But what was worrying was how unproven our squad was. Bringing in Olise, Andersen, Guehe, is an injection of potential, nothing more. Where was Tomkins today? For me, still our best defender. Is he injured (again) or about to be sold? Can we dispense with the idea that Kouyate is a Premiership standard centre-back?
I don't think it's inevitable that we'll go down this season, but it certainly won't be easy staying up. I would suggest that the stagnation of the squad over the last two seasons has come home to roost. The most charitable construction I can put on it is that Roy Hodgson's brief, as given to him by the Chairman over the last two seasons, was to keep the team in the Premiership, irrespective of the quality of the football being played, on a shoestring budget. Well. It worked and it didn't. The football was often dire, relegation was avoided, the squad was allowed to ossify. We come to the new season with good intentions, and rebuilding, that might have been phased, to do pretty quickly.

This is the Reality as i see it, we had an ageing manager and ageing squad on far too large salaries, unsustainable, The only way forward is to invest in youth and reduce running cost to survive, we have no given right to be in the premiership
Chelsea. Man city and Liverpool are on another planet financially, 1 point from them six games would be good.
I personally am very pleased with the new direction the club is going through, cutting wages, and buying and developing youth. And i think the club will be stronger and better in the long run.

the team v Chelsea was essentially last year's with Guehi the only new name. Next week we will have Gallagher and hopefully Andersen too but clearly we are still short of a couple more new recruits.

No panic yet but as you say a reality check - we were poor for the entire game

It was a far from ideal opening fixture, but for perspective, we lost 4-0 to Lampard's Chelsea, who were less organised and with worse depth than Tuchel's set up. Furthermore to that, the team we fielded were far from the strongest we will have once everyone's fit.

We have made some sensible signings, without breaking the bank and have a manager who although is unproved, knows the league very well. Don't underestimate the benefit of having supporters back this year either- this will have a major impact on the grit and fight the players show, especially the tougher games that sit on a knife edge after 70 minutes.

Brentford next week is the real acid test. A dominant (or indeed any sort of) victory on Saturday and the 3-0 at Chelsea will seem a distant memory and irrelevant to our prospects for the season.

You seem to get confused regularly, maybe consider your posts first.

Wilson was still a gamble - £20m for a 28 year old on decent wages who has previously had 2 serious knee injuries and also on the back of a poor season with Bournemouth.

Is a decent player but he does take penalties so his goal tally is a little inflated
