As ever it will be the games against the teams in the list above that determines our fate. It may work in our favour that we play most of them in the second quarter of the season as hopefully we’ll be organised in the new PV style & have some more options available up-front. The last few seasons all three relegated teams have been a degree poorer than the rest and if we can’t manage at least 17th I’ll be surprised.

it's bad luck for Vieira that both Olise and Eze are unavailable, we are weak in too many areas to play a more possession-based game atm. I think the early signs are promising, I like the way he said the fans were 'the number one thing at this club', but we could have five points in November and it might take some time for any returnees and new players to gel. I'm very hopeful but we have to be prepared for hanging round the drop zone till December - I don't think it will be one of those seasons like the last one when we're never below 15th but we'll be around that or above come May.

Not that I'm expecting miracles, but I can't see us getting relegated. Famous last words?

Even if we do get relegated, I feel we are in a much better position now to bounce back straight away. If we went down last year or the previous it would of been much harder work.

We could take a leaf out of Rafa's book. Hired a couple of PL experienced performers, Andros and Gray, they are paying him back straight away. Quality replacements for Andros and Bats, a midfield general, a full-back. I can dream.

Certainly we could be relegated. The good news is that this applies to probably eight other teams. We only need three teams to garner fewer points than us to stay up, if you'll pardon the b....... obvious.

Excellent summary Elwissthebest - it is way too early to judge a team in transition. One of the more significant reasons for optimism is the new centre-back pairing, a very strong foundation which we have been missing for a while. If we can settle in two decent full backs as the season progresses we will have a solid, dependable defence. Midfield is starting to gel, but not good enough yet as we cannot hold and distribute those killer passes, or run through the opposition. Biggest problem is the lack of goalscoring talent upfront, not getting either enough balls or players running into the box: Eze's return will make a difference as will Olise we hope. If we don't sort out increasing the number of goalscoring chances, I fear we will be struggling come January, and then it might come down to whether the team can play with enough grit and determination to get the points in the bag. Wilf remains a wild card, hopefully he can be an impact player, but we can't rely on him anymore to bail us out.

we could be in the cut & thrust of a relegation dogfight or not. we could be nailed to the bottom of the table and a dozen points adrift of the pace. stranger things have happened
