If we fail to add to the squad in this transfer window, then I think yes, we will be in a relegation battle.

But I'm hopeful that won't be the case.

I would much prefer if you predicted us to go down, like the last 8 seasons. This has jinx written all over it. Predict doom please Willo. Get us back on track.

God know, but I reckon his statement was that we will go down.

CPFC was not included in the 3 teams which I predicted to be relegated, much to the amazement of all and sundry on HOL.

Yes, yes we will be in a relegation battle this season, especially in the first half of the season.

I find it incredulous that anybody expected any different. This is not a case of me being unduly negative, especially off the back of the Chelsea result.

I think nearly all of us can accept anything at all out of that game whoever was in charge, whichever personnel we put out and whatever tactics/formation we played would have been a bonus.

First off look at the manager. Yes he is a big name in football and we all hope and want him to do well but the reality is he is unproven at this level. The difference between him and a Hodgeson type is we, the players and the board all knew Hodgeson had been there and done it. Whether we agreed with what he was doing or not he has enough capital in football management for us to understand he had reasons for doing things like he did and that it would keep us in the league. Viera does not have that capital at the moment. If, and yes it is an if, we continue to have a but clenching start it is a question of how long the fans can accept that we are going to be awful for the immediate future and hope we can develop out of it. How long Parish and co are willing to stick it out also remains to be seen. Say we are in the relegation zone at Xmas do they stick? (given the financial commitment they have made to this `new generation` of younger prospects, they have committed fully to this past the point of no return).

Fans have of course been very excited by new signings over the summer. We can't deny they have been exciting but, and it is a very key but they are nearly all `potentials` Olise and Guehi are totally untested at Prem level. In fairness Gallagher and Anderson have been but not over several seasons, effectively Premier Newbies.

Fan's clamoured for a more attacking brand of football. We have got what we wanted, the club has responded. Tactically think about it RH (Like it or not) would go very defensive against a side like Chelsea. Be ultra defensive, yes you may lose but hopefully not by much and goal difference can make a difference in the long game but also importantly mentally for the players. The difference to losing to Chelsea say 1-0, where you can say `hey lads good shift you really worked hard and narrowly lost to the European Champion` compared to....`well what can you say to them that feels credible after the drubbing we got? That means putting in midfielders like Luka etc that break up play, create a screen in front of the back four. For more attacking play you need players who are better ball players, like Jairo. But the reality is if, like we were against Chelsea these players are forced back into chasing shadows and cant get on the ball they are totally ineffectual. If you want a more attacking football yo have to accept that when up against top sides you are going to ship a lot of goals.

So we have Brentford next. And already people are saying that they will judge us after the Brentford game. Brentford are very used to and employ a very aggressive press. They did against Arsenal and got a lot of success from it. Even in the pre-season friendlies we are not remotely comfortable with playing the ball around and out the back. We can expect Brentford to really exploit our weakness with one of their strengths. So I'm sorry to say I think we can expect a very tough match against a Brentford team on a real high. I'm not expecting to get anything out that game.

So yes I am expecting we will be in a relegation dog fight for at the very least the first half of this season. It's just a question of if we and the board hold their nerve with what we are doing or not.

Very good post and summary of where we are and where we might be, frankly I see this season as a real struggle and even with Gallagher and Anderson in our squad who both tasted the bitterness of relegation last season this season is going to be tough and I see us getting a points total around 33-35 points as we really have not improved our squad enough at the back in midfield and especially at the striker level where we have to score more goals if we are to stay up which I hope the latter will be the case but its going to be a long dark winter in SE25!

Some good points here.

With the turnover of players in the summer, together with other factors such as Luka's absence, Benetke's late start and Olise's injury, our pre season was somewhat disjointed I felt. Plus, in my opinion, we still need 2-3 more players. And if we get them, they need to be integrated into the squad.

So plenty of work to be done on the training ground before PV's preferred style of play becomes established.

There are no easy games in the Premier League, but this time last week, Brentford at home looked the most winnable of our first 5 opening games. Too soon for this to be a ' must win ' match, but the reality is that our most likely source of points is against teams outside of the Top 6. Like it or not, a defeat would start to trigger some alarm bells.

I agree, we have a potentially rocky start which could translate into a difficult first half of the season. But I do think we have sufficient quality to stay up.

What I would like to see is a real Leader emerge in the squad. I think that is where we are most lacking at the moment.

This is a good assessment of the situation as it is, or at least appears to be.
As things stand we do have some very real problems to solve if we are not to be headed for a relegation. The two main issues are , A new manager tasked with introducing a way of getting results whilst being more entertaining to watch. Then you have the fact that club have been prepared to let seven or eight regular used players walk.
For the new managers sake that means he should be getting seven or eight players, not just any players, but players that can play in this new style he will want. Sadly if Saturdays game is reviewed it’s obvious that the old guard don’t change, if they are ever going to cope in the sort of set up invisaged they will need surrounding with people that can alter our style and get results doing it.
As of yet only half of what is needed has been put in place IMO, we are still three short , an argument could be made for more. There is time but it’s running down, and you have to ask if we are so short of money ,are we going to get the quality required?
Even if we were only concerned with covering for the inevitable injury curse that happens most seasons we are light weight.
Whatever we do the early season fixtures are about as difficult as could be conjured up. I watched Brentford, against Arsenal, if they bring that standard with them . With the high energetic press they showed it makes us made for them if our ability to push up is as it was at Chelsea. it’s football so I hope not, and of course we should be putting out a stronger starting line up . It could well be a game that tells us our fortune. If we should not be beaten by them and put in a decent performance , then there should be reason to think we have nothing to fear, if not we should have a rough ride. Hoping to correct the situation at Christmas, would be just that ,a hope.

Brentford press so high that Wilf should be able to go on some runs when he beats the first man.

Gallagher to ping passes to Wilf to get behind the Brentford line

Responsibility Deficit Disorder is a medical condition. Symptoms include inability to be corrected when wrong, false sense of superiority, desire to share personal info no else cares about, general hubris. It's a medical issue rather than pure arrogance.

I can't see Vieira's style suiting the PL, unless you have fantastic players.

Hoping we will find 3 worse teams and there is some leeway in investment.

I could say the same, I respect that you are entitled to express your opinion, lets see what the remainder of the window brings us but frankly I'm very worried about our squad generally and its lack of experience at this level
plus our long term injury list, if we do not win against Brentford then we are unlikely to get many points from the next four, if any. I like your optimism but the reality may well be something completely different.

We started the transfer windows really well, with some real promising players. but that's all they are at the moment - Promise. and that doesn't always mean they will be a success. I'm expecting at least one of them not to hit the required standard - not immediately, anyway. It can take a whole season for a new player to find his place. We need to continue this window.
On top of that we have Eze out, Olise out, Mili out. We cannot rely on these players to magically transform us on their return - thats a massive burden.
And On top of that we are trying to change our style. We were solid (ish) last season due to a decent back 4, and 2 midfield protectors. This meant that our attacking play was limited to counter attacking, and very little possession, which appeared to suit us.
PV wants a more possession based style - which will mean the end to the counter-attacks, and poses it's own problems.

It's a big job. On paper, based on previous league performances we probably a little weaker than in previous years, but with a lot more potential to go onto better things. PV has to get this team, and his current players to settle and form a stable platform for us to progress. How quickly this happens will determine our league position.

Take Parkers Fulham last year - integrating a load of new players they started terribly. By the end they were playing pretty good stuff, just all too late and left themselves too much to do.

So yes, we will most likely be in a relegation battle this year. Surprising, Really, that anyone would have thought otherwise.
I for one am interested in how this season pans out, and excited to see how we progress .. and I think that we will have just enough to see it out and stay up - but it could go down to the final few games of the season.

That’s about it really, to be totally successful ,”fantastic,” is the level , to survive in this league capable of improvement would help. Viera, or anyone else , is governed by the rule of,” horses for courses”, we have given him one or two that could be the right type, it’s not enough, that’s clear, as he is happy to say..
