I think Viera could have done worse yesterday, a point was the bare minimum which we achieved and we didn't make it easy for Brentford off the back of their win against Arsenal.

Wilf wasn't great but wasn't terrible either, but his attitude hasn't been helping.

We look like a relatively solid outfit but as usual not quite enough attacking verve. Eze is a big loss for us. We need another winger / midfielder who can take players on.

Most of the new signings looked good. Mitchell didn't have a great day yesterday but needs a bit of time. Perhaps just needs a bit more confidence sometimes to beat a man.

Difficult to judge this side from the Chelsea game as we were never going to get much of a look in. But I was really pleased to see us playing on the front foot more and not giving up possession quite so easily. The new recruits looked good especially Gallagher whose hard tackling and driving runs were excellent. Shame its only a loan. However Benteke and Wilf our two "star" players (and top earners) were poor and needed to get involved more.

I never thought I would ever see Benteke described as a "Star" player on HOL.

Credit where credit is due he did score 5 goals in his last 7 PL games last season, in fact 4 in his last 4, and looked a far better player than he had done in previous seasons.
At present if he gets injured we will need to rely on Mateta/Ayew - we are in dire need of another striker but these players can be a drain on finances.

I think we have to be realistic, this is a team in transition ... with only three new players on the pitch, all of whom did a better job than the players that they replaced from last season's team.

Bekkers was poor, Kouyate was a liability, Ward can't operate as a wing back and Schlupp was unable to create anything for the team. IMHO, PV should sub Wilf if he has another game like to today and then either he continues to throw his toys out of the pram, or he smartens up. PV needs to show who is in charge and make tough calls, even though it might hurt in the short term, in the long run it sets the tone for the whole of the team. AND I was completely unimpressed with Benteke throwing his hands up all the time insinuating that his team members were at fault. He was like a cart horse today, no speed, no running off the ball in to space and just wanting the ball on a silver platter - oh and by the way when he got a great cross on to his head, he put it way over the bar. I rest my case!

Ward can"t operate as a wing back? Benteke missed a great cross to his head? Who delivered that great cross? Ward !

Good point, it seems that Ward has improved under the new regime and he has got in some good crosses and he has not been an obvious liability. Nevertheless, he does not have the quality we need in the 4-3-3 system PV is playing. Mitchell has some iffy moments as well and neither player has the quality that AWB had to stop the crosses coming in from the opposition. IMHO it is an area of obvious weakness for the team, the current two should be back-ups, not first choice and I am sure as time goes on, that will become the case.

Mitchell looked shook yesterday from the off and never recovered. He was a wreck from start to finish and didn’t look comfortable at all. I really hope we have a left full lined up because it is bad enough having 1 senior left full but when the 1 isn’t even good enough it’s a terrible situation.

Some players will adjust to a different playing approach quicker than others.

Let's see how Ty copes in the next couple of games.

There were plenty of positives to take from yesterday’s game. The defence looked solid, especially as it is a new back. A clean sheet is a real positive. Gallagher looks a good addition in midfield.
I would also like it noted the the only 2 crosses of note in the entire game came from Ward ( Benteke headed over) and Ayew (Benteke posturing rather than busting a gut to get to it at the near post). We need to put in more crosses.
Brentford we tough opponents full of confidence and pressed us well. Given all the changes and last weeks abject performance I am not overly disappointed with a point or the performance

Yeah, he got forward a lot more yesterday but you have a point!

I agree,I was at the game and thought Joel had a good game yesterday.Isn’t it funny that over the last eight seasons whatever manager has come in have shown faith in Wardy and I know they no more about football than the idiots on here that keep calling him a league one defender.

Ward looked ok when defending but his attacking passes were very predictable. As a back four we look adequate for playing against most premier league teams.
Midfield need to gel more then with Eze and Olise will be fine.
Forwards are a big question mark. Zaha looks to have lost pace to loose defenders, difficult to assess Benteke because of poor service.
Ayew is not improving, I think that we have had the best from him.
On the plus side Andersen and Guehi look good as does Conner.

Just to reiterate on some observations already made. Draw was a fair result. Thought we were better early but for later part of first half Brentford were on top. Last 10 minutes they really tired and game was there for the taking but we lack quality in final third.
Wilf was poor but he had no support from Mitchell. He looks to have been "found out" all left foot and can only go down the line. When this option was closed down he was regularly losing possession.
If he got forward more often then defenders would have to mark him freeing up space for Wilf. If he stays at 1/2 line then Wilf is going to have 2 players to deal with which has been the case so far this season.
Positive for me was defending of set pieces - we had a lot to deal with and look comfortable.
