I can't help wondering if Max Meyer would have thrived under PV. We all see games differently, but I thought he was a classy player who could have excelled if used properly.

The main thing is we keep showing signs of improvement. We at least pushed and hurried Brentford rather than taking the passive approach of last season and with the creativity of Olise and Eze to come in I think we have reasons to be upbeat about the season. Vieira seems to want the team to play on the front foot, such as the way Guehi pushed into midfield with the ball at times with Kouyate able to slip back and cover him, or how much further up the pitch Ward went with Andersen covering him. Bentenke still looked too static although he did use his body well on one occasion to create a chance for Wilf (I think it was Zaha, I can't remember?) You do wonder how much value he has under Vieira if we are not going to cross the ball.

We still have a lot to prove in the final third, but we certainly looked more solid. I certainly didn't come away thinking it was a poor performance, just an evolving one. West Ham will be a real test.

Anyone else notice lots of empty seats on Saturday? Saw lots in the Arthur near the Holmesdale, and lots in the main stand near the White horse end. I know some are on holiday but for the first home game of the season, and a new manager, with quite a good transfer window, it seemed a bit sparce! The noise on the tv was like a packed house to be fair!

The noise in the ground was also like a packed house at times!

Zaha, doesn’t have quiet the pace and energy of even two seasons ago. He is still a real threat , but teams don’t find it as hard now to shut him down. Pressing him really quickly with two or three bodies is often used on him, but more recently because his pace and trickery is not what it was , one strong pacy close marker ,as Brentford , employed can shut him down. To make matters worse for Wilf, these changes in refereeing will not help him one bit, he is ,and always has suffered from what I would call the up close and personal annoying fouls, the very type that refs are ignoring and tearing up the rule book over. Regardless it still remains the case ,we are not better without him , and probably worse.
